White House Names Miami as a TechHire Community

sfl-miami--techhire-initiative-20160309With news that appears to be a major economic development win for Miami-Dade County, The White House announced that Miami-Dade County is one of two “TechHire” communities designated in the State of Florida, representing the only TechHire community in Southern Florida on Wednesday — the result of an aggressive push by Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, CareerSource South Florida, Arnie Girnun Co-Chair TechHire, Miami LaunchCode, the Beacon Council, a group of employers and accelerated training providers working together to solidify the County’s standing as an information technology training and hiring hub.

Wednesday’s announcement is the culmination of the efforts of local leaders through the TechHire Miami campaign, which is ultimately focused on winning a portion of the $100 million in TechHire-related grants from the Department of Labor and expanding the IT hiring and training ecosystem in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. The campaign’s key partners include the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce, The Idea Center at Miami Dade College, The Academy of South Florida, CodeFever, Florida Vocational Institute, IronHack, LaunchCode, New Horizons Computer Learning Centers and Wyncode.

TechHire is a bold multi-sector initiative and call to action to empower Americans with the skills they need, through universities and community colleges, but also nontraditional approaches like “coding boot camps,” and high-quality online courses that can rapidly train workers for a well-paying job, often in just a few months. The White House launched the TechHire initiative to enhance skills training in the information technology industry. Employers across the United States are in critical need of talent with these skills.

“We’re pleased and honored to receive The White House’s recognition as a TechHire community,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez. “This latest designation serves as further evidence that Miami-Dade is quickly becoming a hub for technology and entrepreneurship. We’ll continue to work with our community economic development partners, employers and local colleges and universities to train and hire workers for the high-skill, high-wage jobs of tomorrow that will be grown right here in our world-class community.”

“Empowering the residents of Miami-Dade County with essential IT skills not only makes the residents competitive for the global market workplace but improves the economic vitality of the community,” said CareerSource South Florida Executive Director Rick Beasley.
