INTERCULTURAL, an immersive art experience by interdisciplinary artist Sheinina Lolita Raj and a sound collaboration by Nelly Furtado, is opening at the Miami Design Preservation League’s Art Deco Museum on Wednesday, September 27, 2017. Following the launch of its world tour in Toronto and preceding New York’s reception, the exhibition will be on display through December 30.

INTERCULTURAL is a visual and sound art experience exploring cultural differences while analyzing the increasing obsolescence of race-based identity. The exhibition features photographs of artist Raj arrayed in the traditional authentic finery of various regions and nations while sounds pieces by Nelly Furtado explore new territory featuring Solfeggio Frequencies, frequencies that allow the mind and body to achieve a greater sense of balancing and deep healing.

“Nelly first saw the exhibition in Toronto and was truly moved by the artwork. She contacted me to ask if I had ever considered adding sound to INTERCULTURAL.  My answer was YES!  And  the collaboration began,” said Sheinina Lolita Raj, Artist. “The sound mixed with the visuals were a beautiful alignment of the overall theme of INTERCULTURAL – enlightening cultural ideologies while initiating respect for diversity, leading humanity to a peaceful coexistence.”

“When I first saw Raj’s Toronto debut of INTERCULTURAL, I was struck with both its power and its simplicity. Ideas about race, culture and nationhood are as relevant as ever. The opportunity to create original music featuring Soundwall technology was a chance to meditate on these ideas and reflect on my own experience as a first-generation Portuguese Canadian,” said Nelly Furtado (Artist/Musician/Lyricist/ Producer.) “I believe that our evolution as humans will depend on our ability to re-envision the world as a place where country lines are irrelevant. I believe art is a catalyst for the empathy this evolution requires.”

A dedicated Art Basel event will take place on December 8 including a talk between art critic and curator, Shana Nys Dambrot and artist Sheinina Lolita Raj. INTERCULTURAL is supported by the Canadian Arts and Culture Global Affairs.
