Miami City Ballet’s Popular ‘Open Barre’ Dance Series Returns:Featuring acclaimed choreographer Justin Peck and ballet scholar and MCB School faculty member Maria TorijaMiami City Ballet’s (MCB) “Open Barre” dance series returns and will feature two programs that offer an in-depth, insider’s view of the Company, the School and a host of creative forces that will give audiences a unique perspective on the art form. Tickets to all “Open Barre” programs are $35 and include a complimentary lobby open bar featuring wine and soft drinks 30 minutes prior to curtain.

The first 26Miami Beach residents to arrive at the box office prior to Open Barre (starting 1 hour before performance) for the Saturday matinee gets in free. Don’t miss this opportunity to go inside Justin Peck’s hotly anticipated world-premiere Heatscape. Justin Peck is one of today’s most acclaimed young choreographers. In 2014 he was named New York City Ballet’s second-ever resident choreographer and his star is just beginning to rise. Miami City Ballet fans know him from his critically acclaimed Chutes and Ladders. This season, MCB Artistic Director, Lourdes Lopez has commissioned the budding choreographer to create an even bigger, more ambitious work that will debut in Spring 2015.

For this presentation of “Open Barre with Justin Peck,” Mr. Peck and special guests, including New York City-based costume design team Reid Bartelme and Harriet Jung, will participate in a discussion about the creative process and MCB dancers will perform excerpts from his upcoming premiere.

“OPEN BARRE WITH MARIA TORIJA” MARCH 13 AT 7PM AND MARCH 14 AT 2:30PM AND 7PM
Maria Torija is MCB School’s newest senior faculty member and a worldrenowned ballet teacher and dance historian. She is also one of only a few ballet scholars to hold a Ph.D. and an illustrious performing career; having danced professionally for 20 years with Germany’s largest ballet company, Stattsballett Berlin. She is an expert on some of the most important works in ballet including classics such as Paquita, Swan Lake and Giselle as well as the repertoire of George Balanchine. Throughout her career she has worked with some of the most important choreographers of the 20th and 21st centuries including Glenn Tetley, Nacho Duato, Jiri Klian, Maurice Bejart, Kenneth MacMillan, Rudolph Nureyev and more.

This presentation of “Open Barre with Maria Torija,” will feature an exploration of ballet history, led by Ms. Torija and performances by the MCB School Ensemble, featuring advanced dancers from MCB School’s Pre-Professional Division.
