Miami Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez joined Miami Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero Stutz today to announce the implementation of the SAFE designation on motor vehicle registrations, a new tool designed to help first responders better serve residents with certain medical or developmental conditions during emergency situations.
The SAFE designation, created by the Florida Legislature, allows individuals or parents and guardians to voluntarily add a designation to their vehicle registration record indicating that a driver or passenger may have a condition that could affect communication or interaction during an emergency or traffic stop.
“This program is about protecting families and making sure first responders have the information they need to respond safely and appropriately,” said Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez. “Our job is to serve residents efficiently while helping keep our community safe. Implementing the SAFE designation is another way we are using the tools available to improve public safety and better serve Miami Dade families.”
The designation can apply to individuals with a variety of medical or developmental conditions, including autism, Alzheimer’s disease, traumatic brain injury, hearing or vision impairment, and other conditions that may affect communication or behavior in stressful situations.
Residents can request the SAFE designation through the Miami Dade County Tax Collector’s Office. The designation is completely voluntary and can be added or removed at no cost.
“Our office operates 13 service locations across Miami Dade County, and our team stands ready to help residents who wish to take advantage of this program,” Fernández said. “We are proud to work alongside the Sheriff’s Office to ensure this tool is implemented responsibly and effectively.”
Residents interested in learning more about the SAFE designation or requesting the designation can contact the Miami Dade County Tax Collector’s Office or visit one of its service centers.
