I am issuing this statement after residents contacted my office about special assessment notices sent by Miami-Dade County.
The notices involve proposed non ad valorem assessments for certain street lighting districts. They were not sent by my office. According to the County’s own legislative item, the proposed increases apply to 219 street lighting special taxing districts, affect approximately 24,890 property folios, and total approximately $1.98 million countywide.
The County has scheduled a public hearing regarding these proposed assessments for June 2, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. at the Stephen P. Clark Government Center.
After receiving hundreds of calls from residents with questions and concerns, I want to make absolutely clear that these notices and proposed assessment increases did not originate from my office. My office did not create or propose these fees, select the affected districts, or participate in the vote on this proposal.
This proposal could affect nearly 25,000 property folios across Miami-Dade County. When that many residents may see a charge connected to their property, they deserve straight answers about who is responsible.
The County’s own documents make clear this is part of a County process involving street lighting special taxing districts. It is not a proposal from my office.
These notices are informational notices regarding a proposed assessment and public hearing process. The notice itself states: ‘DO NOT PAY — THIS IS NOT A BILL.’
My office is focused on saving taxpayers money, modernizing services, cutting waste, and making government easier to reach. That is why I am speaking out now. Residents should not be confused into thinking my office is responsible for this in any way.
The role of my office is limited to collection only if an assessment is lawfully approved and later placed on the property tax bill pursuant to Florida law.
I encourage residents who received one of these notices to read the public hearing information carefully and make their voices heard before any final action is taken.
My office will continue telling taxpayers the truth, clearly and directly.
