The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) made available supplemental Community Development Block Grant (CDBG-CV) funding for grants to prevent, prepare and respond to COVID-19. These funds are intended to assist with the economic fallout of the pandemic across the United States. The City of Miami Gardens received an allocation of $645,962. On May 15, 2020, the Miami Gardens City Council approved Resolution 20-079, authorizing the creation of a COVID-19 Emergency Rental Assistance program, dedicating $300,000 of the Miami Gardens CDBG-CV allocation towards this program.

The program had a two-phase application process and residents were selected randomly by a lottery. The application period was June 8 – 11, 2020, during which time 676 applications were received. The lottery was conducted on June 16, 2020 and was witnessed by third-party auditors who certified the results.

The program has now moved into Phase 2. City Staff is currently evaluating the applications and determining the allocation of the funds.
