Staying Engaged
In my message this summer, I’m encouraging each member of our community to be a positive, actively engaged resident. The City has something to fit everyone’s needs 一 something for everybody to get engaged and involved. There are online programs, athletic programs, programs for our seniors, aquatics and summer camps are now in progress.

Vice Mayor Reggie Leon has really been a leader spearheading the vaccination efforts, but we also have to do our part and remain diligent and careful. Some of my colleagues and I participated in the “Sleeve Up Miami Gardens” vaccination campaign with Live Healthy Miami Gardens, which was aimed at educating the community on the importance of getting vaccinated against COVID-19.

The Bahas Reunion
My most recent accomplishment was The Bahas Reunion celebration of Juneteenth. The Bahas is an area within the City of Miami Gardens from NW 205 to NW 215 Streets and between NW 27 and NW 37 Avenues. Back in the 60s, people who lived in the Liberty City area were looking for something new and different. They moved up to the northern part of the County to an area nicknamed “The Bahas” because it was so far out in the boondocks. I can remember riding horses back there as a little girl. People moved away, but some have wanted to come back and see what’s going on. So I took the initiative to organize this gathering. My youngest attendee was about two or three years old and the oldest was 91. I had people coming from everywhere 一 even from Chicago and North Carolina. It was just great to see some of our old neighbors come back home, and it was exciting and fun to do that for the community.

Creatively Engaging Our Residents
“Seniors Gone Fishing” is an initiative where we’ve been taking young people along with our elders on fishing trips.. We’ve been having a grand old time! Our young people need wisdom from our elders and our elders need some of that new school flavor too.

I have some unique plans for our seniors for the Seat 1 area. I’m going to be working on programs to create jobs and wealth building opportunities for our young adults. We’re looking at September 18, 2021 to jumpstart the Progressive Young Adult Committee in partnership with Miramar.

In closing, I want to remind everyone to be safe and let’s continue to keep this positive forward progress.
