Prioritizing the People
As the new City Council, our influence is being viewed by our residents, and we need to make sure that what we say aligns with our actions. It’s about the people for me. Nothing else. We all have to be flexible. We have to make sure we are prioritizing the people.

New Leadership
Miami Gardens now has more young progressive thinkers on the new Council. The body also comprises of more women on the Council, which is going to be amazing. As it relates to the nation, we have our first woman of African descent as the vice president. Looking at that leadership on that level is a game changer. Kamala Harris referenced John Lewis in her victory speech and I, too, plan to get into some “good trouble!”

Building on the Past
One program I would like to build upon is Live Healthy Miami Gardens. Another priority for me is communication with our residents. We have a radio station and I’d like to utilize to its fullest capacity.

Our seniors are the backbone of this community. They’ve been our long-time residents, so it is critical for us to invest in initiatives that keep our seniors engaged and active.

On the other end of the spectrum are youth initiatives. With the ongoing pandemic and social issues, we have to empower our young people and take care of them by providing programs that teach life skills and build upon their talents to become future leaders and history makers.

Financial Literacy is How We Win
I’d like our residents to benefit from financial literacy seminars for everyone to have the opportunity to build wealth. We have to be more financially savvy, especially with what’s going on in the economy right now. If it’s taught us anything — it is how to work with what we have and to work with one another — then we won’t have to struggle.

We need to make sure our residents are in-the-know about what’s available to them and what they can benefit from. When you look at other, more affluent communities, they don’t rely on the government for assistance. They come together, they pool their resources, and they make the magic happen. We’ve got to make sure that our people have the facts. That’s how you win.
