Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

On every American’s 18th birthday they are given a free gift courtesy of the U.S. government and that is the right to vote. Here in Florida more people than ever can participate in this democratic process.  For the first time, “returning citizens” who are former felons once banned from voting for the rest of their lives unless restored in person by the governor, can register and vote. The passage of Amendment 4 has enabled over 1 million new Florida voters.

As Florida faces this new voting landscape, we’ve gathered the essential information you need on securing and acting on your own right to vote.

How Do I Register?
You can register to vote at the Miami-Dade County Elections Department office, or locally at the City of Miami Gardens City Clerk office within City Hall. In addition, you can submit a voter registration application by mail to the Miami-Dade County Elections Department. You can also visit
RegistertoVoteFlorida.gov to check your voter registration status online.

There are two (2) upcoming elections in Miami Gardens: a General Municipal Election on August 18, and the Presidential Election on November 3. In order to vote in an upcoming election, you need to be registered to vote one month prior.

How Do I Vote?
Casting your ballot is just as important as registering to vote. You can vote by mail through an absentee ballot, vote in person at an Early Voting site or on Election Day. Absentee ballots are a great option for people with limited mobility or for those who are unable to leave work on Election Day. To vote by mail, you must request to have an absentee ballot mailed to you from the Supervisor of Elections Office. Early voting sites are located throughout Miami Gardens and open at least 10 days before Election Day. On Election Day, polling locations are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to ensure participation before, after and during working hours.

Why Is It Important To Participate?
Participating in an election gives citizens a voice. Voting is a right and no longer a privilege. For Residents of Miami Gardens, voting allows you to choose appropriate leaders who match your values, and laws that reflect and respect your community.
