POSITIVE PEOPLE IN PINECREST – MAYA LEBOWITZ

Palmer Trinity junior Maya Lebowitz moved from New York to Miami and experienced culture shock. “I’ve never seen so many Hispanic people,” she says. “I was coming from a mostly Jewish area. Coming into a new school, just starting high school seems a scary thing. I feel I have been a part of it. Embraced by people that you don’t know that well.” That acceptance gave her confidence to work with fellow student Sam Katz to revive the Jewish Culture Club. As they work to organize the club, they have been educating students about Jewish holidays and what they mean. They had an apples and honey session to inform people about Rosh Hashanah. “We’re trying to expand our reach outside of Palmer,” she says. One program she’d like to get more students involved with is Friendship Circle Read More »

HOW STEM CELLS MAY AFFECT OUR AGING PROCESS

The concept of aging varies from individual to individual. Different theories have emerged over the last 100 years seeking to explain it, with Max Rubner first theorizing about a “vital substance” that suggested why an animal as big as an elephant lives more than a small mouse. Sixty years later, Leonard Hayflick concluded that a cell’s genetic program would “deplete” after a certain number of divisions, that is, the cell would “die” after dividing about 50 times. Today, this interesting phenomenon is known as “Hayflick’s Limit” and reminds us of our mortality. Nowadays, there are new concepts in regards to cellular aging. In particular, stem cells have become the focus of several interesting theories hoping to explain it. An organism ages not because of the amount of damage that arises in its tissues, but because of the inability of our own stem cells to regenerate and rebuild these tissues. Read More »
