Dental health is a key component of the Animal Health Department’s preventative medicine program at Zoo Miami. A variety of issues ranging from gum disease to fractured and broken teeth can lead to critical care issues that may result in serious infection and even death without treatment. Because animals generally do not complain about dental pain, dental disease is often referred to as “silent suffering” in the animal health field. By the time serious signs such as loss of appetite and weight are evident, the disease or infection process may be quite advanced and can be a debilitating and sometimes fatal issue in animals that do not receive the proper care. As part of the overall preventative medicine program at Zoo Miami, dental exams are routinely done on a variety of animals during regular general health exams. If issues are diagnosed, depending on the severity of the problem, Zoo Miami’s team of veterinarians will ..... Read More

Understanding the Choices: Why Filler and Botox Recommendations Vary
‘Tis the season for parties with friends and co-workers, family gatherings, and concert performances. It’s also the time of year that many of our patients consider treating themselves with the gift of a fresher look. One of our patients recently reached out with a question that encapsulates widely held sentiments about such cosmetic treatments using facial fillers and neurotoxins. She explained that she’d already consulted with two different doctors and received two very different recommendations regarding which products to use. She wanted to know why there’s such a variation in opinions. And, of course, she also wanted our recommendat.... Read More

Life Time Miami Marathon Selects Artist, Laelanie Larach, to Create Custom Medal Ribbon for 2025 Event
Miami artist Laelanie Larach built her reputation in South Florida through her unique abstract oil paintings that became known as “coastal art.” Vibrant and colorful and hand-painted to brighten up the room, Larach’s works are eye-catching and the South Florida art community has started taking notice in recent years. So when the Life Time Miami Marathon & Half presented by FP Movement went on a search for the artist to design its medal ribbon for the February 2, 2025 race, staffers came across an article that showcased Larach as a rising Miami artist. They loved the style of her paintings and reached out to ask if she would like the honor of designing the medal ribbon that every runner who finishes the Marathon or Half Marathon will take home with their medal at the finish line on race day. “What an honor that they chose me to create a painting that represents the Marathon and the vibe of Miami, everything that is Tropical,” Larach said. “I’ve bee... Blue Zones Certification Boosts Real Estate Values
Ave Maria, one of the nation’s top-rated master-planned communities located in Collier County, Florida, started turning blue in 2017. Residents claim the wellness label boosts home values and improves lifestyles for everyone who lives there. When National Geographic Explorer Dan Buetter first coined the term “blue zone” he never imagined that nearly 100 communities across North America would adopt the wellness concepts his studies revealed. More than two decades ago, Buetter investigated places around the world where people regularly lived to 100 and beyond. He concluded that activity, plant-based diets and lasting social ties contributed to this longevity. In an interview with the New York Times, Buetter emphasized that unlike other wellness initiatives, blue zones focus on creating an environment that helps people make healthy choices easier versus trying to persuade them to change behaviors.....
