Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners restored critical funding for transit while not increasing property taxes as they gave final approval to the County’s 2017-18 budget. The vote took place during the early morning hours of Friday, Sept. 29 at the end of a ten-hour budget hearing.
The critical funding for public transportation, a top Commission priority, was reinstated after Commissioners objected to proposed transit spending reductions included in the Mayor’s original proposed budget during the Commission’s first budget hearing on Sept. 19.
The 2017-18 budget also increases the number of police officers by 65, extends tutoring hours at county libraries and boosts funding in other areas.
“I applaud my fellow commissioners for passing a budget that restores much-needed funding for public transportation, which is so important for ensuring Miami-Dade’s status as a world-class community,” Chairman Bovo said.
