Miami Dade College (MDC) announced a partnership with MasTec at the grand opening of its new Broadband Utilities Lab located at MDC North Campus. MDC President Madeline Pumariega and Jose Mas, CEO of MasTec signed an agreement to officially launch the collaborative initiative focused on enhancing education, workforce development, and innovation in broadband technology as part of the College’s Construction Trades Institute (CTI) and supported by FloridaCommerce.

“As Miami Dade College remains dedicated to leading the way in preparing the future talent of our community and state, this partnership with MasTec strengthens our mission to provide students with practical experience and advanced training in broadband technologies,” said Miami Dade College President Madeline Pumariega. “Together with a trusted industry leader, we are honored to build the skilled workforce needed to connect our community and ensure students are prepared with the skills needed for success.”

This partnership underscores MDC’s commitment to working with industry leaders to grow the workforce of tomorrow. MDC and MasTec collaborated on the design and construction of the Broadband Utilities Lab, which will provide students with hands-on experience and unique training opportunities, as well as developed a curriculum to meet the rising demand for skilled professionals in the telecommunications and fiber optics industry.

“As a Miami founded and based company, we are committed to helping inspire students and give them an opportunity to develop the skills and proficiency to excel in the technology sector and help shape the future together,” said Jose Mas, CEO of MasTec.

The initial courses are available through MDC’s School of Continuing Education and Professional Development. Courses are designed to align with industry needs and prepare students for entry-level roles and the potential to earn industry-recognized certifications, including the Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT), Fiber Optics Installer (FOI), OSHA 30-hour Safety card, and First Aid/CPR/AED certifications. Upon completion, graduates can apply for employment with MasTec.

The Broadband Utilities Lab is a key addition to the growing range of offerings at the North Campus. CTI offers training in electrical, HVAC, plumbing and now broadband.
