The Miami-Dade County School Board has approved a $37.5 million investment in two major renovation projects at James H. Bright/J.W. Johnson Elementary School and West Lakes Preparatory Academy in Hialeah. These projects, funded by the General Obligation Bond (GOB), aim to improve facilities and provide modern, safe learning environments for students in the community.
James H. Bright/J.W. Johnson Elementary School – $15.2 Million Investment
James H. Bright/J.W. Johnson Elementary, built in 1959, will receive extensive upgrades, including interior renovations to classrooms, restrooms, and common areas. Outdoor spaces, such as the track and field area and basketball courts, will also be revamped. Additionally, essential infrastructure improvements will be made, such as the installation of a new HVAC system, the replacement of windows and doors, and exterior painting. This project will enhance the educational experience for the school’s 848 students and is expected to be completed by August 2026.
West Lakes Preparatory Academy – $22.4 Million Investment
West Lakes Preparatory Academy, which serves 695 students, will undergo significant upgrades to modernize classrooms and facilities. The project includes the renovation of multiple buildings to create new middle school classrooms, an updated cafeteria, and improved locker rooms. The campus will also benefit from new windows, a modern HVAC system, and an upgraded public address system. These improvements are designed to create a more efficient and comfortable environment for students and staff. The project is set for completion by August 2026.
A Strong Commitment to Education and the Hialeah Community
“These renovation projects represent a long-term commitment to improving our schools and providing the best possible environment for our students,” said School Board Member Roberto J. Alonso. “We are proud to invest in these schools, ensuring they continue to serve as vital resources for the Hialeah community.”
The renovations at James H. Bright/J.W. Johnson Elementary and West Lakes Preparatory Academy reflect the School Board’s ongoing commitment to enhancing educational facilities and fostering student success.
