United Teachers of Dade Celebrates 50 Years of Landmark History, Stands Against Harmful Education Policies in Florida, Inspires Educators to Remain Committed

The United Teachers of Dade (UTD) is proud to announce a special retreat marking our 50th  anniversary of advocating for educational excellence and equity as we start the 2024-2025 school  year. This milestone not only highlights our rich history of achievements but also underscores our  commitment to defending public education against harmful policies currently emerging in Florida.

Throughout the past five decades, UTD has been at the forefront of championing teachers’ rights,  advancing student outcomes, and promoting sound educational policy within our schools. As we  celebrate this golden anniversary, we reflect on our significant victories and renew our resolve to  address the pressing challenges of today.

Recent developments in Florida have raised serious concerns regarding educational policies that  undermine the quality and inclusivity of public education and teachers’ rights. Florida currently  ranks 50th in the nation in teacher pay. These policies threaten to diminish the profession, hinder  the autonomy of educators and restrict the breadth of academic freedom, ultimately harming  students’ learning experiences.

In response, UTD is rallying education leaders from across Miami-Dade to resist these detrimental  changes and advocate for a more equitable and supportive education system. Our retreat will  serve as a platform to galvanize our members, share strategies for effective advocacy, and inspire a  collective push for a better future for all students and educators.

“We are proud of our 50-year legacy of fighting for high-quality education, but the work is far from  over,” said UTD President, Karla Hernandez-Mats. “As we face new threats to public education, it’s  crucial that we stand united and resilient. We encourage educators across Miami-Dade to join us in  this fight, ensuring that every child, no matter their race, nationality, or zip code has access to a  high-quality and inclusive public education.”

The retreat will feature a keynote address by President Hernandez-Mats, workshops, and strategy  sessions aimed at equipping educators with the tools they need to challenge regressive policies  and champion a vision of public education that is equitable, inclusive, and student-centered.
