WDNA 88.9FM Radio Announces New General Manager

The board of directors of WDNA 88.9FM are pleased to announce  the appointment of Gene de Souza to the position of General Manager. Listeners, local Miami music insiders, and a global online audience will recognize him as the long-running producer and host of Café Brasil, the only Florida program dedicated entirely to Brazilian music, a 25-year staple of the station’s schedule.

Gene’s new role fills the vacancy left after longtime general manager, Maggie Pelleyá, passed away in  2023 after more than 30 years in that position. Having worked closely with Maggie for so many years  prepares Gene for this new step in his career – as does his experience with programming and hosting radio shows, producing concerts for city governments, theaters, and corporations, and booking North American tours for major Brazilian artists. Notably, his Café Brasil radio show has received the  prestigious Ibermúsicas Award, multiple Miami New Times “Best of Miami” and Brazilian International  Press awards.

“After an exhaustive search for just the right person to lead the station into its next chapter, we are thrilled  that Gene has accepted the position,” says Board chair Cecil Persaud. “His combination of experience and focused determination make him an excellent choice for the station’s continued growth as we enter a time where listener support is more important than ever.”

A graduate of University of Richmond with a degree in international relations, Gene served 16 years as the Development Director of The Rhythm Foundation, a premier presenter of world music in the Southeastern US. He is also a music columnist for newspaper AcheiUSA, a board member of Centro Cultural Brasil-USA da Florida (CCBU) and a member of the Brazil committee for the Latin Grammy® Awards.

“I look forward to working with WDNA’s talented and dedicated team as we move forward into a new era,” comments Gene. “We’ll be working to strengthen all aspects of the station including the broadcast signal, streaming audience, digital and social platforms, jazz gallery events, grants, sponsors and new partnerships, further cementing WDNA’s reputation as a unique, ground-breaking radio station.”

Gene lives in Bay Harbor Islands with his wife Vanessa, and sons Lucas and Tomas. They enjoy going to the boys’ soccer tournaments on the weekends, biking, bowling, beach activities, and exploring different  restaurants around South Florida.

Zachary Zinn of Craig Zinn Automotive Group Named One of Automotive News’ 40 Under 40

Zachary Zinn, corporate executive vice president of Craig Zinn Automotive Group (CZAG), has been named to Automotive News’ 2025 40 Under 40 list. This annual national program honors 40 high achievers under 40 years old who are making an impact at franchise new-car dealerships across the country.

Automotive News received nominations from across the U.S. and identified outstanding performers in a large field of high-quality talent at dealerships. This year’s honorees are a diverse group with a broad range of titles and backgrounds. These bright stars were profiled in the July 14, 2025 issue of Automotive News, the leading news source for the global automotive industry.

Zinn began his career in automotive retail in 2011. Since that time, he has successfully led the development and expansion of the Toyota of Hollywood Used Car Supercenter. At Subaru of Pembroke Pines, he played a key role in increasing new car sales, establishing the dealership as a top-performing location. This success led to the expansion of the brand in South Florida with a new dealership location, which is soon to be announced.

Since then, he has successfully led the development and expansion of the Toyota of Hollywood Used Car Supercenter. After relocating the center to a larger facility in 2023, he helped grow used-car sales by approximately 10 percent and added a body shop and used commercial vehicle line. At Subaru of Pembroke Pines, he played a key role in increasing new car sales, establishing the dealership as a top-performing location. This success led to the expansion of the brand in South Florida with a new dealership location in West Kendall, which is expected to open in 2026.

Zinn has overseen multi-million-dollar renovation and expansion projects, including Subaru and Toyota locations, ensuring modernized facilities and enhanced customer experience. His leadership in corporate financial oversight has improved operational efficiencies, reduced overhead costs, and streamlined dealership profitability.

Zinn is actively involved in industry associations, including The Florida Auto Dealers Association, where he serves as a board member; and The Acura NCM 20 Group.

He has been a strong advocate for philanthropic efforts within the automotive industry, spearheading multiple community initiatives and dealership partnerships that have significantly impacted local organizations.

“Zachary is extremely well-deserving of this recognition,” said Craig Zinn, president and CEO of CZAG. “Since he began his career in the automotive industry at a very young age, he has gained hands-on experience in various departments, eventually moving into service, finance, and sales roles that built his foundation for dealership operations and leadership.”

“This is such an honor and a meaningful opportunity to continue the legacy my grandfather and father built,” said Zachary Zinn. “The family business has shaped who I am, and I’m proud to carry it forward with purpose.”

The School Board of Miami-Dade County, Florida, Approves Initiative Sponsored by School Board Member Roberto J. Alonso Enhancing Safety in School Speed Zones

At the School Board Meeting of July 23, 2025, School Board Member Roberto J. Alonso proffered  agenda item H-3, requesting the Superintendent of Schools to explore the feasibility of: a. in accordance with Section 316.1895, Florida Statutes, and the Florida Department of Transportation  (FDOT) Speed Zoning Manual, immediately initiating a traffic study for the remaining four (4) schools  that currently do not have established school speed zones, prioritizing any school area with recent  traffic accidents; b. as deemed appropriate, collaborating with the FDOT, the Miami-Dade  Transportation Planning Organization (TPO), Miami-Dade County, the Sheriff’s Office, and other  relevant local and state entities to expeditiously establish and implement school speed zones at high  schools currently lacking such protections; and c. identifying and pursuing available funding, whether  through public grants, interagency partnerships, or local appropriations, for both the engineering studies  and the installation and maintenance of school speed zoning infrastructure.

Student safety is a top priority for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, which has long collaborated with  state and local agencies to implement school speed zones and signage—primarily around elementary  and middle schools. However, four district high schools still lack these protections, leaving thousands of  students vulnerable during arrival and dismissal times.

On May 29, 2025, the Miami-Dade TPO passed a resolution urging action to establish high school  speed zones. In response, this Board item directs the Superintendent to: conduct a traffic study at the  four unprotected high schools, prioritizing those with recent incidents; collaborate with FDOT, Miami Dade TPO, law enforcement, and other agencies to implement school speed zones; pursue funding  through grants, partnerships, or local sources for planning, installation, and maintenance.

“The safety of our students is paramount. This initiative aims to protect our high school students by  launching traffic studies, collaborating with local and state partners, and securing funding to implement  school speed zones where they’re most urgently needed,” said Board Member Alonso.

Pursuant to agenda item H-3, administration will report back to the School Board by September 3,  2025, at the Fiscal Accountability and Governmental Relations Committee Meeting.

99-Year-Old Man Thanks Broward Health Employee for Pulling Him from Crashed Car After Train Collision in Pompano Beach

    scene of the crash

Lawrence Esteban, 99, was allegedly involved in a serious train crash on Monday around 7:00 p.m. He was driving along West Atlantic Boulevard near Andrews Avenue in Pompano Beach when the crash occurred.

The Boca Raton resident remained inside his car after the crash, as he was injured and bleeding from both arms.

Shawn Williams, a physical therapist assistant at Broward Health North, had just finished work when he noticed a silver Nissan in bad shape, with cars swerving around it. The vehicle was positioned parallel to the railroad tracks, its front end badly damaged.

    Lawrence Esteban

Shawn saw that someone was still inside and immediately sprang into action. He pulled Lawrence out of the passenger side as a bystander called 911. The Good Samaritan reassured Lawrence, telling him not to worry about the car; his health was the priority.

“He was talking to me, saying, ‘Don’t worry about the car, don’t worry about that. He said, ‘You first,’” Lawrence recalled.

Using his training, Williams pushed the driver’s seat back to give himself more room, then carefully helped move Lawrence’s legs out of the car.

“Finally, we got his legs out, moved him to the passenger side, got him to stand up, and the physical therapist in me just kicked in. I asked, ‘Could you stand?’ and he said, ‘Of course I can stand.’”

As they worked together, Shawn overheard paramedics from Pompano Beach Fire Rescue #103 mentioning they were transferring Lawrence as a level 1 trauma patient to Broward Health North.

“I overheard one of the paramedics say, ‘He’s going to North Broward,’ and I thought that was the right place for him to be.”

At the hospital, the trauma team noticed that Lawrence had a broken bone in his upper body. Given his age and heart condition, they decided it was best to let the bone heal on its own.

Lawrence was discharged on Wednesday, July 23. Before leaving, he and his daughter, Angel Larrinaga, took a moment to thank Shawn for his quick thinking and heroic actions, as well as the trauma team that cared for him.

Now, Lawrence looks forward to the next chapter of his life—he’s planning a trip to Spain.

Broward County Public Schools becomes the first district nationwide to implement innovative platform that connects schools directly with local businesses

Broward Education Foundation, the only 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated solely to supporting Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), announced a groundbreaking partnership with SponsorPlace, a turnkey platform that simplifies sponsorship management and unlocks new revenue streams for K–12 schools. The initiative positions BCPS as the first school district in the nation to adopt this all-in-one system that connects every school with community businesses elevating support for athletics, performing arts, PTAs, and special events.

Click here to visit Broward Education Foundation’s dedicated landing page, featuring a variety of sponsorship opportunities supporting individual schools across the district.

“The SponsorPlace initiative represents a vital opportunity to foster greater engagement between local businesses, the educational community, and the students of Broward County,” said Dr. Howard Hepburn, Superintendent of Broward County Public Schools. “We believe in the power of community collaboration to improve educational outcomes and are excited to play a role in ensuring every student in Broward County can reach their full potential.”

Developed by Campus Multimedia, the nation’s leader in K–12 brand activation, SponsorPlace offers a transparent, scalable, and easy-to-use solution that streamlines how schools engage with sponsors. “SponsorPlace has elevated the way we approach strategic partnerships and resource development across Broward County,” said James A. Knapp, President & CEO of Broward Education Foundation. “This new platform empowers schools with the autonomy they need, while giving district leaders structure and transparency to build trust and deliver an impact.”

    Empowering Education Through Strategic Partnerships

As a bridge connecting the business community with the classroom, Broward Education Foundation seeks to maximize its impact and elevate education through strategic partnerships, such as with SponsorPlace which offers a centralized marketplace with key benefits:

    • Access to Sponsorships: All schools—regardless of size or location—have equal access to sponsorship opportunities.
    • Streamlined Operations: Less administrative burden on staff, enabling more time for students and programs.
    • District Oversight and School-Level Control: While administrators monitor activity and ensure compliance, individual schools retain full control over their sponsor relationships.

“Schools need funding to run strong programs, but finding support takes time and resources many districts just don’t have,” said Karl Mawhinney, CEO of Campus Multimedia. “Meanwhile, local businesses want to support schools and be seen in their communities. SponsorPlace bridges that gap—making it easy to create measurable, meaningful sponsorships that benefit everyone.”

Real Results: South Plantation High School’s Success Story

South Plantation High School (SPHS) used SponsorPlace to generate revenue quickly—without traditional cold calls or time-consuming outreach.

    The school:

    • Created a digital “storefront” where local businesses could browse and purchase sponsorship opportunities.
    • Leveraged a QR code printed on school maps at Parent Night, allowing families and businesses to access their SponsorPlace page instantly.
    • Sold three carline banner ads with zero outreach, transforming everyday moments into revenue.

“We love our SponsorPlace page. It’s easy to track money coming in, and it’s exciting every time we see another sale,” said Ricardo Marino, Assistant Principal of Western High School, formerly South Plantation High School.

Family Expo, Parent Club Pass Help Round Out Summer; Ready Kids for School

Summer in Miami-Dade is in full swing, and The Children’s Trust is working hard to make it memorable. From the return of the Family Expo to the launch of a program that rewards parents and caregivers for learning parenting skills and techniques, The Trust is helping make the most of these final weeks of summer by filling them with fun, learning, and support for all children and families in our community.

The Children’s Trust Family Expo, the community’s largest free family resource event, is making its highly anticipated return to the Miami-Dade Fair & Exposition—where it was held for over a decade—on Saturday, August 2, with a full day of fun, resources, and school-year preparation.

Held in the Fuchs Pavilion on the fairgrounds, the Family Expo gives families a chance to pick up free school supplies for elementary, middle, and high school students. Children and youth can get backpacks, pencils, pens, folders, notebooks, and more while supplies last, and The Trust’s provider and partner network will have even more supplies and surprises to give away.

While the supplies are great, since the kids are still in summer mode, they’ll probably be more interested in the games, activities, and entertainment the Family Expo offers. There will be face painters, balloon artists, temporary airbrush tattoo artists, a Kid Zone, arts and crafts, and character appearances and shows. There will also be a photo booth and food trucks. An indoor stage will host performances throughout the day-long event.

The Mobile Units will offer vaccinations and physicals for families and students who need them before the school year begins and provide on-site dental care services.

As kids stock up on their new backpacks and enjoy games inside and outside the building, their parents and caregivers can learn about the valuable resources and services available to families through The Trust and its extensive network of service providers and partners. Parents can connect with community organizations offering programs for after-school care, children with special needs, health services, and more. This is the core reason we host the Family Expo—there are many incredible low-cost and free services for children and families, and we don’t want you to miss out.

Even getting there has been taken care of as The Children’s Trust once again partnered with Uber to offer $15 vouchers to and from the Expo. Learn more at TheChildrensTrust.org/FamilyExpo.

The Parent Club Pass is earned by attending three Parent Club workshops, which are free, welcoming sessions offered in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole. These workshops cover real-life parenting topics for every age and stage – from toddlers to teenagers. Many in-person sessions include free child care, snacks, and raffle prizes. Virtual workshops are also available for added convenience.

Once you attend three different workshops and complete short feedback surveys, you’ll receive a Parent Club Pass – your ticket to free, family-friendly experiences like movie nights, theater and sports events, or visits to local museums and parks.

This is a great perk for recognizing that parenting is the most important job in the world and gives additional opportunities to spend quality family time together.

Five Website Design Mistakes Miami Businesses Must Avoid

    Website Design Mistakes Miami Businesses

In today’s digital-first landscape, effective website design is pivotal for Miami businesses aiming to enhance their online presence. Yet, many companies still encounter common pitfalls that negatively impact their digital marketing success, including their social media marketing efforts.

Here are five frequent website design mistakes to avoid.

    Slow Page Loading

Few things frustrate potential customers more than slow-loading websites. Studies reveal that a page loading time exceeding three seconds significantly increases bounce rates. To ensure optimal site speed, invest in reliable hosting services, compress images, and streamline your use of JavaScript and plugins.

    Poor Mobile Optimization

With mobile devices driving over half of global internet traffic, failing to optimize your site for mobile can drastically limit your reach. A responsive design, ensuring seamless navigation across smartphones and tablets, is critical. Mobile-friendly websites not only improve user experience but also bolster social media marketing by facilitating smooth transitions from social platforms to your site.

    Ignoring Local Branding

Incorporating local Miami elements can significantly boost regional visibility. Including recognizable local landmarks, leveraging Miami-centric SEO keywords, and showcasing testimonials from local clientele help resonate deeply with your community. This targeted approach effectively complements your broader social media marketing strategy, enhancing your connection with local audiences.

    Overly Complicated Website Design

A cluttered website confuses visitors and undermines user experience. Clear, intuitive navigation with visually appealing yet straightforward designs encourages prolonged visitor engagement. Simplicity ensures visitors easily find the information they seek, increasing the likelihood of conversions.

    Neglecting Effective Calls-to-Action (CTAs)

Distribution part of employee effort to help bridge the digital divide and equip 30,000 students nationwide with supplies before they head back to school

AT&T* and Compudopt provided Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami with 150 refurbished laptops and backpacks stuffed with school supplies today to distribute to Miami students and families in need.

“We are fortunate to have AT&T as a partner as we bridge the digital divide and make sure our Littles are equipped for a successful school year,” said Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami President & CEO Gale Nelson. “These laptops will connect them to a world of possibilities because the “stage” is never too BIG for our Littles!”

This event is part of a broader AT&T employee effort to help bridge the digital divide and distribute 30,000 backpacks filled with school supplies and laptops to students in qualifying households before they head back to school. The backpacks included supplies like notebooks, pencils and headphones, as well as cards of encouragement written by AT&T employees.

“AT&T is proud to collaborate with organizations like the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami to help level the playing field for students in Miami,” said Rashad Thomas, regional director, external & legislative affairs, AT&T Florida. “Connectivity is vital for students, and we’re glad we can provide these resources to those that need them most.”

According to U.S. Census Bureau data, millions nationwide still don’t have access to the internet or connected devices needed to fully participate in the online world, an issue known as the digital divide.

This effort is part of AT&T’s initiative  to help address the digital divide through internet accessibility, affordability and safe adoption. AT&T is committing $5 billion to help 25 million people get and stay connected to high-speed internet by 2030.
