Maria Alejandra Castaño: Passionate Leadership at Loretta & the Butcher

Coconut Grove, Miami’s oldest neighborhood, has quietly evolved into one of South Florida’s most successful business communities – and it’s no accident. With its blend of charm, strategy, and community, the Grove offers a blueprint for how local economies can thrive.

At the heart of its success is a strong sense of community. And at the heart of the Grove’s bustling downtown district are independent businesses, like Loretta and the Butcher on Commodore Plaza, with Maria Alejandra Castaño at the helm.

By cultivating a loyal customer base that values authenticity and true connection, Castaño’s quaint bistro tucked between the busy shops and other businesses on Commodore Plaza has fast become a beloved neighborhood staple.

“Since the very beginning, we wanted to be more than just a restaurant. We’ve built real relationships with our guests and with other businesses in the Grove. We know their names, their favorite dishes, and make each visit one that feels like they’re home.” The loyalty and warmth of their customers continue to fuel the restaurant’s growth.

    Culinary Passion

With a passion for Argentine cuisine and making guests feel at home, she’s created a fine restaurant that’s a one way ticket to Buenos Aires. Her journey proves that with the right ingredients, vision, and boldness, anything is possible.

Beyond perfecting beef, Loretta & the Butcher honors an iconic Argentine culinary tradition, led by the passionate and determined Castaño. As a powerful woman in a male-dominated industry, she runs a restaurant that embodies authenticity, quality, and community in the deepest sense.

Castaño’s love for food began in her childhood, growing up in Colombia where meals are a symbol of unity and tradition. “Since I was a little girl, cooking has been my passion and my way of expression. And I’ve always been fascinated by how the right dish can tell a story, awaken emotions, and bring people together.”

Her admiration for Argentina’s beloved cuisine eventually led her to acquire Loretta & the Butcher, where she brings the essence of la parrilla (Argentine grill) to the Grove. With respect for each cut of meat and a dedication to using the highest quality ingredients, she ensures each dish represents the true flavors of Argentina.

“Loretta & the Butcher is more than a restaurant; it’s a total experience. We want patrons to feel transported to Argentina through flavors, aromas, and the welcoming warmth of the atmosphere.”

What Makes an Argentine Grill Great?

A true Argentine “parrilla” is more than just grilled meats, it’s a whole ritual. “Everything starts with the highest quality cuts, cooked over fire with patience. Coarse salt is all the seasoning that’s needed to highlight the succulent meat’s true flavor.”

But beyond the food, it’s about connection. “A true parrilla is meant to be shared with friends and family, with melted provoleta, a glass of wine, and, of course, chimichurri to add the final touch. It’s about friends and family gathering around the grill, living in the moment filled with passion.” At Loretta & the Butcher, every meal is designed to capture that spirit.

    Breaking Restaurant Industry Barriers

Running a restaurant as a woman comes with some challenges, but Castaño has always met them head-on with the utmost confidence and perseverance. “The biggest challenge has been breaking biases and stereotypes in a typically male-dominated industry, and proving that female leadership is equally strong and strategic.”

Balancing her roles as a businesswoman, mother, and wife is no easy feat, but Castaño has cultivated a restaurant known for both excellence and inclusivity. “Seeing Loretta and the Butcher grow, curating a unique experience, and being passionate about leadership shows that you can balance those three crucial roles without giving up your dreams.”

    The True Taste of Argentina

Loretta & the Butcher’s menu is specifically curated to immerse their guests in the authentic Argentine flavor. Signature dishes include bife de chorizo, ojo de bife, and entraña, all grilled to perfection.

Another standout is Arroz del Gaucho, a bold, comforting dish that echoes Argentina’s rich culinary traditions, alongside their world-famous empanadas, crispy on the outside, boasting a variety of fillings, and bursting with flavor inside. Each dish transports guests straight to Buenos Aires, one bite at a time.

What’s Next for Loretta & the Butcher?

Looking ahead, Maria Alejandra envisions expanding Loretta & the Butcher while maintaining its warm and welcoming atmosphere. “We’re exploring new opportunities to bring our delicious dishes to even more people, all without losing the signature warmth that defines us.”

Her journey is far from over, and that passion burns bright, strong as ever. “Oh, I believe the best is yet to come,” she says.

Hurricanes Swept in Charlottesville After 7-0 Deficit, Fall 8-6 to Virginia in Game 3

Miami SWEPT in Charlottesville, losing to Virginia 8-6 despite rallying back from a 7-0 deficit
    VIRGINIA: GAME 3
SWEPT! Charlottesville, Disharoon Park, and the Virginia Cavalier serve as a poignant reminder of opportunities lost. This is not the moment in the season to lose hope, but like last year, we find ourselves facing a challenging streak that needs to be corrected in our final series against the Irish. What once seemed like a challenging path entering this series, with the potential for a double bye, is now precariously focusing on maintaining a single bye.
Tate DeRias, our ace in the hole to secure a win, turned into a joker as the Cavaliers jumped all over him in the first inning with a two-run home run to open the game, and they were just getting started. Five unanswered runs would follow, giving the Cavs a commanding lead of 7-0 without a response from the Miami hitters at the end of six. They managed only three hits through six innings, going 3-20 at the plate. They had already recorded six strikeouts and looked lost at the plate facing the Virginia pitchers, which did not seem overwhelming. As for Tate, he lasted 3.1 innings, giving up all seven runs on six hits without recording a single strikeout.
After six lackluster innings, the bats ignited in the 7th, driving through the order and scoring five runs. Miami transformed from a dismal 3-20 through six innings to a potent offensive display, finishing 4-7. This rally was spearheaded by Gaby Gutierrez’s RBI double, followed by an RBI single from Jake, and capped with Daniel’s impressive 15th homer, which soared 377 feet, narrowing the gap to two runs.
Jackson Cleveland took over for Tate in the 4th inning and did an admirable job against the Virginia lineup, despite giving up a double to the very first batter he faced—an earned run for Tate. He held the Cavaliers in check for the next two innings as the Hurricanes steadily clawed their way back into the game. After a surprising 5-run inning from Virginia in the 7th, the momentum started to shift towards the Canes. However, Henry Ford interrupted that surge with a leadoff home run. It appeared that the Canes had difficulty maintaining that momentum in the 8th, especially as Virginia substituted in a new pitcher. With three runs behind, the Canes faced a challenging situation ahead with their top order set to bat.
Jake opened the 9th inning with a walk, followed by Max hitting a single to right center after Jake successfully stole second base. This set the stage for Daniel, the team’s most effective hitter, to come to the plate. With runners positioned on the corners, Daniel delivered a single to right, scoring Jake and moving Max to third base. At this juncture, a question arose: why didn’t JD opt to pinch-run for Daniel with Fabio, waiting until the second out to do so instead? With runners on the corners and no outs while trailing by two, what unfolded next was disappointing and a reflection of the weekend’s struggles. Both Dorian and Jake Kulikowski, who pinch-hit for Evan, struck out. With only one out remaining, JD chose to replace Renzo with Nolan Johnson, who has had minimal playing time this season. This decision is likely to prompt further scrutiny. Facing an 0-1 count, Nolan made contact but flew out to center, concluding the Canes’ rally in the 9th and ultimately getting SWEPT in Charlottesville.
The overall performance of both the offense and the pitching fell short of expectations. Tate DeRias, who has been exceptional throughout the season, faced challenges similar to those of his predecessor, Griffin, struggling to emerge from the first inning without conceding a run. By the fourth inning, with the number of runs and hits allowed accumulating, he seemed to be running on empty. The offense’s inability to respond left Miami scoreless through the first six innings, placing them in a difficult situation. The five-run rally in the seventh demonstrated that the team has the potential to recover, yet they couldn’t deliver the decisive blow. Daniel Cuvet stood out once again, going 3-for-5 with his 15th home run and four RBIs. Additionally, Jake Ogden proved to be a significant contributor, finishing 3-for-3 with one RBI. Together, they accounted for five of Miami’s six runs and six of the nine hits. Gaby Gutierrez also marked his season with his first double.
The team will return at the Light on Thursday at 7:00 PM for a crucial match in jockeying for position in the ACC Tournament. Unfortunately, the chances of hosting a regional are looking bleak after this weekend’s results. We will need significant assistance to secure a double bye, while aiming to at least maintain a single bye. Without these, our pitching will struggle to carry us through the Tournament. Here’s hoping for a bit of Irish luck!

Cavaliers Walk Off Canes in Game 2 Thriller, Clinch Series 10-9

In a thrilling finish, the Cavaliers clinched game two and the series 10-9, leaving Miami with a bittersweet loss in a walk-off finish.
    VIRGINIA: GAME 2
The Virginia Cavaliers executed an impressive comeback, displaying remarkable determination throughout the game. They fought hard to recover even when they were down by four runs. Miami had multiple opportunities to secure the win, with its offense scoring nine runs. However, their pitching faltered under pressure, allowing critical hits that enabled the Cavaliers to rally. Ultimately, Virginia clinched victory with a thrilling walk-off single in the 9th inning, bouncing back from a one-run deficit in the game’s final moments.
The Canes started the game with impressive offensive momentum, highlighted by Daniel’s powerful 423-foot home run that set the tone early on for Miami. However, the lead was short-lived as Virginia quickly answered with a series of runs in the second inning. It became evident from the outset that AJ Ciscar was not performing at his usual level; the Cavaliers capitalized on this by loading the bases in the second inning with a pair of singles and a hit batter. When it seemed like AJ might escape the challenging situation with an 0-2 count, Aiden Teel stepped up with a clutch bases-clearing double, giving Virginia a 3-1 lead and hinting at challenges ahead for Miami’s pitching staff.
After Virginia’s bases-clearing double in the second inning, Miami’s offense surged in the third. Dorian ignited the scoring with an RBI single, followed by two consecutive walks that brought Miami’s second run. Renzo then capped off the inning with a grand slam home run, extending Miami’s lead to 7-3. It seemed Miami was firmly in control of the game; however, the Virginia players had other ideas, persistently fighting their way back into contention.
Virginia opened the third inning with a double, cutting the Canes’ lead to three runs. The Canes responded in the fourth inning, reloading the bases again and scoring one run on a sacrifice fly by Dorian to left field. They reloaded the bases for a second time in the inning but could not add to their score.
The 5th inning approached with mounting tension as the Miami bats remained silent. By this point, it was clear that AJ’s earlier effectiveness had diminished significantly. After issuing a leadoff walk and allowing back-to-back singles that resulted in a run, AJ’s outing came to an end. This triggered a series of pitcher changes from the bullpen, but they too faced challenges against the revitalized Virginia lineup, which steadily clawed its way back into the game. A run in the 6th inning and two more in the 7th erased Miami’s once-comfortable 4-run lead, leveling the score. Miami cycled through three pitchers during these innings in a desperate attempt to quell the onslaught, ultimately leading JD to call upon Brian in the 7th to stop Virginia’s rally. Unfortunately for the team, Brian also struggled; the first two batters he encountered walked, loading the bases. Then, with the count at 1-1 against Eric Becker, Brian inadvertently hit him in the foot, bringing the score to a tie at eight.
Following a challenging stretch where Miami endured three scoreless innings while the Cavaliers attempted a comeback, the Miami offense surged back to reclaim the lead in the 8th inning. Brian rediscovered his rhythm, shutting out the Cavs for the first time in three innings, with an outstanding catch from Michael Torres preventing Jacob Ference from hitting a potential home run.
Three outs to victory. Harrison Didawick, who homered last night, took the first pitch he saw from Brian and sent it sailing to right center, tying the game at nine. The Cavaliers would not be denied. The next batter walked, stealing second and setting up Aiden Teel, who had the 3 RBI double in the second, to walk it off with an RBI single to right, securing a much-needed series win for Virginia and delivering a devastating loss for the Canes.
Offensively, scoring nine runs on eleven hits typically would be enough to secure a victory in any game. However, the lack of strong pitching tonight overshadowed our offensive efforts. It highlights that regardless of the number of hits or runs we achieve, without solid pitching to back it up, we can’t hope for a win. Virginia demonstrated better efficiency with runners on base, while Miami struggled to convert opportunities, failing to capitalize despite having the bases loaded four times and missing out on runners in scoring position. Daniel Cuvet stood out among hitters with a standout 3-4 performance, featuring a home run and a double. Additionally, three other players made significant contributions, with Max Galvin, Dorian Gonzalez, and Renzo Gonzalez all recording multiple hits, the latter hitting a grand slam even though it came in a losing effort.
The pitching performance tonight left much to be desired, which significantly affected our chances throughout the game. From our starter to the relievers and finally our closer, we encountered difficulties in containing Virginia, who demonstrated a stronger desire for victory. While both our defense and offense displayed potential, we fell short in one crucial area: effective pitching. Looking ahead, it will be imperative for Tate DeRias to step up if we aim to secure at least one win in this series. The team is motivated to excel, as shown by their efforts today, but improvements in pitching are essential to avoid a sweep.

Iran and Ethiopia have a security deal – here’s why they signed it

Iran has signed a security agreement with Ethiopia, a regional power strategically located in the Horn of Africa. Wikimedia Commons

    Eric Lob, Florida International University

Ethiopia and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on 6 May 2025. Under it, their national police agencies will cooperate on security and intelligence. This will include combating cross-border crime, sharing intelligence and building capacity. They will also share experiences and training.

For Iran, the MOU marks a significant step towards strengthening relations with a regional power that’s strategically located in the Horn of Africa.

Tehran has been using its security apparatus and military capabilities to establish and expand political and economic ties with countries in Africa. This has included drone transfers to the Ethiopian government that helped it turned the tide of the Tigray war, a separatist struggle in the country’s north that took place from 2020 to 2022.

Iran has also supplied the Sudanese army with surveillance and combat drones. These have been used against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in Sudan’s ongoing civil war.

The agreement is important for Ethiopia for two reasons.

Firstly, it’s likely to enable the Ethiopian government in Addis Ababa to combat ethnic militias more effectively. It faces increasing internal instability, including tensions with hostile factions of the separatist Tigray People’s Liberation Front.

Secondly, the agreement comes after a meeting in Addis Ababa between the Ethiopian police chief, Demelash Gebremichael, and a delegation from Iran’s regional rival, the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The exchange concentrated on investigating and extraditing cross-border criminals.

Addis Ababa’s willingness to work with regional rivals in the Middle East shows its pragmatic approach to foreign relations. Ethiopia needs all the friends it can muster as an embattled and weakened state. Since the Tigray war, it has battled the rise of ethnic militias and confronted economic adversity. It is also facing renewed hostility with neighbouring Eritrea.

    What Iran stands to gain

Since 2016, Ethiopia has been a gateway for Iran to gain a foothold in the Horn of Africa. That year, other countries in the region severed relations with Iran. This followed Tehran’s disengagement from sub-Saharan Africa under Hassan Rouhani, who served as president from 2013 to 2021, and his prioritisation of a nuclear deal with the US.

The severing of ties was also a byproduct of geopolitical pressure exerted by Saudi Arabia and the UAE on countries in the region. The Middle Eastern states wanted to reduce, if not eliminate, Iran’s presence in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea to limit its support for Houthi rebels in the ongoing Yemeni civil war.

Ethiopia was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to establish relations with Iran during the 1960s. It was also one of its top trading partners on the continent before and after the 1979 Iranian Revolution.

Strategically and ideologically, this special relationship was based on the pro-western and anti-communist stances of their monarchs: the Shah of Iran Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who ruled from 1941 to 1979, and Emperor Haile Selassie, who was in power from 1930 to 1974.

After the revolution, Iran-Ethiopia relations revived under Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who served as Iranian president from 2005 to 2013. He pursued an active Africa policy to mitigate Iran’s international isolation and circumvent US sanctions.

After Rouhani initially downgraded these relations, they were renewed during his second term. This followed US withdrawal from the nuclear deal.

Relations firmed when Ebrahim Raisi, who served as Iranian president from 2021 to 2024, delivered military drones and other aid to Addis Ababa during the Tigray war.

    What’s in it for Ethiopia

Ethiopia is facing increasing instability and uncertainty. The Tigray war has depleted the state’s resources. There is an economic crisis caused by rising inflation and unemployment.

Addis Ababa continues to confront ethnic tensions. Hostile factions of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front remain. It also faces tensions with the Amhara Fano militia, which initially fought alongside the government against Tigrayan forces. Forced disarmament policies and ongoing land disputes caused the militia to take up arms against the government.

Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed also faces growing opposition and resistance from his own ethnic group, the majority Oromo, and their Oromo Liberation Army. The reason for their discontent is Abiy’s imposition of centralised rule on their regional state within a federal system.

The security and intelligence cooperation with Iran could allow Addis Ababa to combat ethnic militias more effectively.

It would also enable Ethiopia to prepare for another possible war against neighbouring Eritrea.

Ethiopia and Eritrea normalised relations and fought together against Tigrayan forces. However, tensions between the two countries have been brewing again. These have been triggered by two factors. First, the conditions of the 2022 Pretoria peace agreement caused Eritrea to maintain forces inside Ethiopia. Second are the ambitions of Addis Ababa to acquire a Red Sea port in Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia. Eritrea has supported Somalia’s opposition to the deal.

    Regional power games

This isn’t the first time that Ethiopia has tried working with two regional rivals – Iran and the UAE. The UAE is also among its top trading partners, along with Saudi Arabia.

In 2016, Ethiopia was the only country in the Horn of Africa that didn’t cut ties with Iran, though it was under pressure from the UAE and Saudi Arabia to do so. The decision was taken by Abiy’s predecessor, Hailemariam Desalegn, whose term ran from 2012 to 2018.

During the Tigray war, Ethiopia received military drones and other assistance from Iran and the UAE, alongside Turkey.

The civil war in Sudan has presented an even more complicated story. Ethiopia has vacillated between engaging with the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces at different points in the conflict.

For its part, Iran has supported the Sudanese army. The UAE has backed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

Ethiopia’s efforts to strengthen its security ties with Iran and the UAE show a unique case of convergence between regional rivals that have otherwise remained on opposite sides of conflicts in countries like Yemen and Sudan. The Conversation

Support local business: It’s a patriotic thing

The Aventura Marketing Council/ Chamber of Commerce (AMC) has always been fortunate to have two or three Mayors attend their Breakfast Meetings. However, once a year, the AMC holds a very special meeting called “Meet the Mayors” where the Mayors participate in a panel to share the ‘good news’ about their cities. From innovative energy solutions that provide sustainable power to our ongoing initiatives focused on improving infrastructure, storm resiliency and supporting local projects, we’re committed to making Florida an even better place to live, work and raise a family.“

Justin Mila, Sr. Regional Director of Business Development for Hotwire, added, “ Hotwire Communications is proud to deliver its all-fiber network to the greater Aventura community, offering future-proof connectivity with unmatched speeds, reliability, and innovation directly to residents’ doorsteps. Headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Hotwire was the first ISP in Florida to launch an all-fiber network, specializing in delivering scalable community-wide technology solutions for condos, municipalities, and senior-living communities – all supported with its signature concierge-level service.“

Terry Kennedy, retirement planning guru, founder of Appreciation Financial and architect of Linqqs HMP teased his groundbreaking innovation for both public and private sector employees, saying “By shifting healthcare from reactive to proactive, Linqqs HMP can and does positively impact retirement savings and likely solves the Social Security looming crisis.”

And then it was time for the Mayors to take their place at the panel table and begin sharing their city’s good news. The Mayors covered everything from new developments and infrastructure to city improvements. Mayor Nickerson took his allotted time to present plaques to the AMC leadership to thank them for their “service, dedication and truly making a difference”in the South Florida business community.

Seven Mayors share the podium at Aventura Marketing Council/Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Meeting FPL, Hotwire and Linqqs HMP sponsor exceptional meeting

At the AMC’s recent Meet the Mayors Breakfast Meeting, seven Mayors shared the podium, including: Aventura Mayor Howard S. Weinberg, Esq; Bay Harbor Islands Mayor Isaac Salver; Dania Beach Mayor Joyce Davis; El Portal Mayor Omarr Nickerson; Golden Beach Mayor Glenn Singer; North Miami Beach Mayor Michael Joseph and Sunny Isles Beach Mayor Larisa Svechin.

The beautiful Carrington Ballroom at the Hilton Aventura was filled to capacity with AMC members who were not only eager to hear each Mayor’s update, but to parktake of the great networking that is the hallmark of the AMC. The first half hour of the meeting was devoted to networking and the breakfast, with superstar Young Star singer Camie Liz providing background music and the sound system from HNO Productions before Aventura Mayor Howard S. Weinberg, Esq. extended a warm welcome to everyone on behalf of the “City of Excellence”.

Meeting Title Sponsor Chelsea Lunn, FPL’s External Affairs Manager MiamiDade, said “ As FPL celebrates its 100th anniversary, we remain focused on delivering affordable, reliable energy through a diverse mix that includes solar, nuclear and natural gas. Innovation’s at the heart of what we do—our new Florida Power & Light and Miami-Dade Clean Water Recovery Center repurposes up to 15 million gallons of treated wastewater daily to support power generation at the Turkey Point Clean Energy Center. This forwardthinking public-private partnership shows how innovation and collaboration can help conserve resources, reduce waste, and support resilient energy for the future, all while keeping energy bills low for families and businesses.

Jumbo Business EXPO at DCOTA great success

The spirit of camaraderie is alive and well amongst some of South Florida’s most active and productive business organizations! Each year, the Aventura Marketing Council/Chamber of Commerce (AMC) organizes a Jumbo Business EXPO and Networking event at DCOTA (Design Center of The Americas) with the Dania Beach Chamber, Hallandale Beach Chamber, Hollywood Chamber, North Miami Beach Chamber and Prime Time Business Network…and each year, the rave reviews increase.

Each Chamber and Prime Time invited their members to take display tables and encouraged all members to attend to meet potential new clients and expand their business network. Almost 80 exhibitors had their tables filled with literature, samples and door prizes long before the 5pm event start…they knew from experience that the business attendees would start arriving around 4:30pm to have ample time to visit all the exhibitor tables. Randie Shane, Exec. Director of the Dania Beach Chamber, brought in the grand prize of the evening — a two-night stay at the Le Meridien Hotel with dinner for two at Toro . A brief program run by AMC Chairman Gary Pyott had the organizational leaders thanking their members for being exhibitors and for attending as guests. AMC Chairman Gary Pyott emceed a brief program which featured Hon. Bobbie H. Grace and Pat Chukerman for the Dania Beach Chamber, Norma English for the Hallandale Beach Chamber, Ojetter Smalls for the Hollywood Chamber, Hon. Evan Piper and Leslie Loewenthal for the North Miami Beach Chamber and Dr. Mike Wendrow for Prime Time Business Network. Where Japanese Tradition Meets Contemporary Elegance at Acqualina

Where Japanese Tradition Meets Contemporary Elegance at Acqualina

Ke-uH at Acqualina Resort & Residences has undergone a significant redesign, masterfully blending the authenticity of Japanese aesthetics with contemporary sophistication and American elegance. The restaurant renovation, led by Italian design group Cristiano Gatto Design, has transformed the space into a serene yet sophisticated dining environment.

Ke-uH’s large windows introduce bright, natural light, highlighting the tranquil setting ideal for a gourmet breakfast. As night falls, the ambiance shifts to a more intimate setting, with soft, dimmable lighting that enhances the dining experience, making it perfect for peaceful dinners or social gatherings.

The redesign introduces elements such as vibrant red drapes, which add warmth and a touch of traditional Japanese color symbolism to the space. Each table is designed to balance privacy with openness, fostering a versatile dining experience suitable for various occasions. The innovative lighting concept allows for adjustable light settings, ensuring the ambiance can be tailored to match the time of day or the mood of an event.

Adding to the ambiance is a strategically placed Bonsai tree in the main dining room, embodying tranquility and meticulous attention to detail—hallmarks of both the restaurant’s cuisine and its design philosophy. The lounge area has been reimagined as a romantic, secluded oasis, with drapery that provides exclusivity and a soft, piano bar-like atmosphere that preserves privacy while inviting relaxation.

What does remain the same is the chefs’ dedication to showcasing personal recipes, making everything from the ponzu sauce to aioli sauce in house. Plates are tapas-style and meant to be shared. In addition to sushi with a twist and surprise hits like the salmon pizza, dive into baby back ribs, sliders, pork belly, along with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.

The new Ke-uH is an experience engaging all senses with its stunning design and exceptional cuisine, reflecting Acqualina’s dedication to providing an unmatched luxury dining experience.

Use approved building materials ahead of 2025 hurricane season

As residents in Miami-Dade County prepare for the upcoming 2025 hurricane season, Miami-Dade County’s Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources (RER) Board and Code Administration Division – Product Control Section, urges homeowners to stay informed and seek out Miami-Dade County-approved building materials when making upgrades to their properties, helping them meet the most stringent standards for safety.

“As we approach another hurricane season, protecting our homes and families must be a top priority,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “Our Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources is working hard to ensure building products are up to the highest standards in order to protect lives and property. We encourage all residents to verify that they are using Miami-Dade County-approved materials – an investment in safety, resilience, and peace of mind.”

The county’s Product Control Section establishes a protocol to evaluate the standards of products used in construction in Miami-Dade County. With its inclusion in the High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ), Miami-Dade County has the most advanced code requirements of the Florida Building Code. Therefore, all products that comprise the structure’s building envelope — doors, shutters, windows, prefabricated buildings, roofing and truss connectors — require the issuance of an approval to be used for construction in Miami-Dade County.

“Many retailers sell a wide range of products,” said Jaime D. Gascon, Board and Code Administration Division director. “However, residents should look for the ‘Miami-Dade County Product Approved’ seal or mark on those products, indicating they met the high standards.”

Residents should inquire about the use of Miami-Dade-approved products from their construction contractors to ensure that they benefit from these safety standards of the local building code and products as they get ready for the hurricane season.

Whether purchasing the building products themselves or through a hired contractor, it is important that homeowners know what to look for.
