SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER MARY BLANCO AND THE SCHOOL BOARD OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, RECOGNIZE CASA FAMILIA, INC.

At the School Board Meeting of April 17, 2024, School Board Member Mary Blanco proffered agenda item B-3, recognizing Casa Familia, Inc.

Casa Familia Inc. is a South Florida-based nonprofit organization founded in 2015 by a group of families of loved ones living with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Mobilized by the shared fear of an uncertain future in which they would no longer be able to care for their loved ones with special needs, the Jawitz and Whitehurst families came together with the dream of building a supportive community where their relatives could lead meaningful, productive, and fulfilling lives. The main goal of the organization is to sponsor the development of affordable housing communities to serve adults living with IDD in Miami-Dade County, a great need that the founding families had experienced personally with their relatives.

In the entire state of Florida, there are only five (5) affordable housing communities dedicated to individuals with IDD and none of them are in the South Florida area. That was about to change in 2019 when Casa Familia was awarded much-needed resources to begin the first stages of the development of The Village of Casa Familia, the first affordable housing community for people with IDD in Miami-Dade County. Located in the Kendall area, near public transportation, employment opportunities, shopping centers, and recreational and medical facilities, The Village of Casa Familia will offer its residents affordable housing, vocational and continuing education opportunities, and extracurricular and recreational activities in a campus-style setting. The vision behind The Village of Casa Familia is to provide adults with IDD adequate resources to maximize their independence and nurture their social connectedness in a supportive environment that meets their needs.

On December 19, 2023, for many families in our community, fear for the future turned into hope for tomorrow with the groundbreaking ceremony of The Village of Casa Familia. The construction of The Village of Casa Familia is a dream come true and the result of more than eight years of arduous work and advocacy from the entire Casa Familia team, its Founding Board Members, including Karin Jawitz, Marie-Ilene Whitehurst, Lourdes Sanchez, Debbie Lawrence, Maria Perez, Vinita Tandon; Casa Familia’s Executive Board, including Anay Abraham, Executive Director; Natasha Lowell, Chair; Michael Moran, President; Nick Inamdar, Vice Chair; Tom Whitehurst, Vice President; Erbi Blanco-True, Treasurer; Michael Alessandri, Secretary; Casa Familia’s diverse community of leaders from the public and private sectors, families, friends, and community leaders and partners.

This resolution recognizes the exceptional work that Casa Familia, Inc. has done and continues to do in support of people living with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families and friends, and the entire Miami-Dade County community. We join Casa Familia, Inc. in celebrating the commencement of the construction of The Village of Casa Familia.

NORTH MIAMI AMONG RECIPIENTS OF US DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION’S THRIVING COMMUNITIES PROGRAM TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE GRANT

The City of North Miami was selected among 112 US communities to receive technical support and capacity building through the United States Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) competitive FY23 Thriving Communities Program (TCP). North Miami also holds the distinction of being the only Florida-based TCP recipient.

This program provides two years of no-cost, intensive technical assistance to help under-resourced and disadvantaged communities, like North Miami, identify, develop and deliver transportation projects to achieve various means of locally-driven economic development. The TCP prioritized communities working to advance transportation projects that improve health and safety outcomes, reduce housing and transportation cost burdens, preserve or expand job opportunities and increase reliable mobility options to better access healthcare, food, education and other essential destinations.

Through the program, the City of North Miami seeks to provide a safe, convenient and efficient motorized and non-motorized transportation system for all of the City’s residents and visitors.

For the duration of this program, City of North Miami staff will be partnered with Abt Associates Inc., the TCP Capacity Builder team funded and assigned by the USDOT. North Miami’s Assigned Capacity Builders will provide project-level technical assistance. Additionally, as part of the application criteria, the City of North Miami was mandated to identify two community partners for this project. Selected partner organizations were the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce and the Haitian American Chamber of Commerce of Florida.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the City of North Miami and a solid potential framework and scope of our City’s transportation and mobility future,” said Alix Desulme, Ed.D., Mayor of North Miami. “In our City, we understand the value and impact of a well-planned and executed transportation system and infrastructure. Through the years, we’ve invested greatly in strategic transportation planning. As preparation of North Miami’s official Mobility Plan nears completion, with great expectation I await the many innovative and out-of-the-box transportation and mobility possibilities we’ll be positioned to explore by merging our internal knowledge and resource base with our new federal partnership, and existing state and local partnerships.”

In the last year through TCP, the DOT helped urban, rural and tribal communities identify and develop grant applications for critical infrastructure projects. This year’s selected TCP communities and assigned Capacity Builders will begin working together in Summer 2024.

About the City of North MiamiNorth Miami is a suburban city located in northeast Miami-Dade County, Florida. It is roughly ten miles (16 km) north of Miami. The city lies on Biscayne Bay which surrounds the Biscayne Bay Campus of Florida International University. North Miami is home to a diverse demographic of residents. With more than 64,000 residents, it is the sixth largest city in Miami-Dade County. It is the home to the Oleta River State Park; the largest urban park in the Florida State Park System and the nationally accredited Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA).

MOCA North Miami Welcomes New Spring Shows, Public Art, and More!

I hope you are taking care! As we move into April, I wanted to make sure that you keep the going-ons at MOCA North Miami on your radar. From the early days of Manuel Mathieu’s solo presentation to a reintroduction of MOCA’s permanent collection, alongside musical and film events for the entire community to enjoy, it’s been a busy and exciting season at the museum!

Freshly opened to the public, Haitian-born artist Manuel Mathieu debuted his first major, solo presentation, World Discovered Under Other Skies and Dwelling on the Invisible, at MOCA last week. The presentation brings together new works alongside his signature visual oeuvre in a compelling examination of the long-lasting repercussions of the Haitian Revolution and the country’s quest for self-determination. On view through October, the paired exhibitions are a riveting demonstration of the interplay between an artist’s chronicles of his audience, and their own histories.

Alongside Mathieu’s presentation, the museum also invites a reinterpretation of iconic pieces from its permanent collection. In a new group show, titled Collection Focus: Light Play, MOCA curator Adeze Wilford brings together 9 contemporary artists—Petah Coyne, John Espinosa, R.M. Fischer, Nancy Haynes, Julian La Verdiere, Dennis Oppenheim, Joan Robey, Sarah Seager, and Jo Nigoghossian—in a joint presentation bringing light to the darkened entrance rooms of the museum, and reflecting on the past and present relevance of the museum’s legacy.

Bringing art works off the walls and outside, the museum is also hosting its annual Art on the Plaza and Welcome to Paradise series. These public installations can be seen on MOCA’s front plaza and in the outdoor courtyard, currently featuring works by local artists Yanira Collado and Alexandra Fields O’Neale. Both distinctive works invite the community on a journey through Miami’s rich history with the African Diaspora through symbolic, interactive monuments that represent joy, protection, migration, spirituality, and the cycles of life.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava statement on reimposed sanctions on Venezuela

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava issues a statement in reaction to the Biden administration’s reimposed sanctions on Venezuela’s oil industry after Maduro violated agreements to ensure fair elections.

“Today’s actions to reimpose sanctions on Venezuela is welcomed, as it sends a clear message that the disqualification of presidential candidate Maria Corina Machado by the Maduro regime is a blatant attack on the electoral process and undermines our democratic values.

“The Venezuelan government continues to deny basic human rights in violation of the Barbados Accord, and the Biden administration’s swift response imposing sanctions once again reaffirms we stand in solidarity with the Venezuelan people including the thousands who call Miami-Dade home.”

United Way Miami Celebrates 100 Years of Impact

United Way Miami, one of the leading non-profit organizations in South Florida is kicking off its centennial celebrations. Founded less than three decades after Miami’s official incorporation, on April 24, 1924, United Way Miami has supported local families daily for 100 years to build a thriving, resilient community. From global pandemics to natural disasters to inequity across different groups, United Way Miami has led the region through these crises.

It directly leads 14 initiatives to help the underserved and provides funding, expertise, research, advocacy, public awareness and volunteers to nearly 100 programs at more than 60 local agencies. Every year, United Way Miami’s work impacts the lives of more than 230,000 individuals.

The organization remains the go-to resource for the area’s most vulnerable residents, serving as a beacon of hope for a better tomorrow. By combining Miami’s public and private partners to lift those in need, residents become empowered and equipped to survive challenges, improve their lives and become part of a thriving Miami.

United Way Miami helps families facing unexpected hardships and enables them to plan for a stable financial future. United Way also helps military veterans pursue training for in-demand careers and helps children reach their full potential by providing quality early education. It also gives older adults nutritious meals, in-home personal care and fitness programs.

United Way Miami is laying the foundation to make an even greater impact over the next 100 years, ensuring everyone in Miami-Dade has access to quality education and the opportunity to live healthy and financially secure lives. Marshall Davis, Adrienne Arsht & Charles Greenfield

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County (@arshtcenter) has recognized three individuals who made significant contributions to the Arsht Center and the Miami cultural community at large with the inaugural Arsht Award. The honorees are Marshall L. Davis with the Arsht Education Champion Award; Ruth W. Greenfield (posthumously) with the Parker Thomson Legacy Award; and Adrienne Arsht with the Arsht Angel Award.

The recipients were honored at a ceremony on April 13, 2024 during the Arsht Center’s 18th Anniversary Gala, which united more than 300 community leaders in support of the Center’s mission-driven education and community engagement programs.

The Arsht Center and the Miami-Dade community have benefited from contributions from many remarkable members of our community. The inaugural annual Arsht Awards recognize and honor those individuals (and organizations) in three categories: Arsht Education Champion Award,  presented to an individual who has made significant contributions to arts education in Miami-Dade County, emphasizing the importance of exposure to the arts on learners of all ages; Parker Thomson Legacy Award, presented to an individual whose advocacy and leadership has significantly enriched the cultural landscape of Miami-Dade and advanced the mission of the Arsht Center; and the Arsht Angel Award, presented to an individual who has supported the Arsht Center’s work through significant and sustained financial contributions.

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County is made possible by the public support of the Miami-Dade County Mayor and the Board of County Commissioners, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Tourist Development Council and the City of Miami Omni Community Redevelopment Agency, as well as the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Arts and Culture and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture. The Adrienne Arsht Center also receives generous support from individuals, corporations and local, state and national foundations.

About Us

Set in the heart of downtown Miami, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County is committed to welcoming and connecting ALL people to the arts, to the Arsht Center and to each other. Our stages are alive year-round with artists from around the world, innovative programming from our resident companies and local arts partners, free community events that reflect Miami’s unique identity and arts education experiences for thousands of Miami children each year.

Since opening in 2006, the Arsht Center, a 501C3 non-profit organization, has been recognized as a catalyst for billions of dollars in new development in the downtown area, a leader in programming that mirrors South Florida’s diversity, a host venue for historic events and Miami’s hub for arts education.

Each year, we serve more than 60,000 young learners and offer more than 100 culturally diverse and inclusive education programs — many enhanced by the Arsht Center’s relationship with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, local teaching artists and Miami-based arts organizations.

The Arsht Center is also a home stage for three resident companies — Florida Grand Opera, Miami City Ballet and New World Symphony — and a launch pad for local artists to make their mark on the international stage. Our 300+ events each year include the Center’s Signature Series of classical, jazz, Broadway, local theater and much more. We present a robust series of touring Broadway musicals direct from New York, the largest jazz series in South Florida, a major annual Flamenco Festival and an award-winning Miami-based theater program. In addition, our Family Fest, Free Gospel Sundays, CommuniTEA LGBTQ+ celebration and Heritage Fest are among dozens of free events that bring together people from all corners of our community. Is Palmetto Bay Marina Possible?

Gusmans want Olympia Theater back after Miami neglect
Grant Miller

Mark this day! I am righting the ship on what to do with the 70-acre parcel off Biscayne Bay once home to FPL that should be a park and a marina with restaurants, stores and boating services instead of only a park! I left the marina part out of the last column.

Imagine the fanfare from residents of South Dade and the number of jobs created by what I’m calling the Palmetto Bay Marina, which many Village residents would support. All of us in South Dade know that we have boats lined up at Matheson and Black Point on Saturday and Sunday mornings waiting to get on the water.  We certainly could use another Marina to take the pressure off of those two.

How would we make it happen? Well, Miami-Dade County would still have to buy the property at 6525 Southwest 152nd Street from the private property owner. Think Homestead Miami Speedway, but with water and boats instead of high speed racing.

To get our bearings, let’s look at the marina services that are already available:

Black Point Park & Marina, located at 24775 SW 87th Ave., has 200 boat slips, contributing to its status as the largest public marina located in Miami. It’s got a fuel dock, boat ramp dockage and boat rentals.

Matheson Hammock is a 630-acre urban park at 9610 Old Cutler Rd. that surrounds the north and western ends of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. The park has a full-service marina with 243 wet slips and a fenced in dry storage facility with 71 spaces, a snack bar and restaurant built into a historic coral rock building, picnic pavilions and nature trails. Matheson also contains a sailing and powerboat school.

Chapman Field Park, which has 483 acres at 13601 Old Cutler Rd., has also been discussed in the past as a full service marina. But somebody dropped the ball on that.

Turn the 70-acre environmentally contaminated parcel on Biscayne Bay  into a park and marina and you get a great destination for locals and visitors looking to park their boats somewhere convenient. I think 200 slips would be sufficient and certainly help the boating enthusiasts in South Dade.

And, maybe closing a deal on a park and marina would motivate the Village of Palmetto Bay and the private property owner to settle litigation that has been an albatross on the land for years.

As for the park and marina, the 70 acres would still have to be contained to make sure the contamination in the soil isn’t a health hazard to park visitors and does not leach into the bay. The same would have been required of the 110-home site the property owner had planned for the site. So, in the end, the contamination would be mitigated and the property would be recycled as a beautiful park and marina.

So, let’s get it together people. Let’s make the park and marina the most beautiful destination in Miami-Dade, drawing thousands to South Dade instead of the hundreds of residents 110 homes would have added. It’s hard to believe Palmetto Bay officials turned down a single family housing project on the Bay, but I guess that’s in the past now.

I’m all in for turning the 70 acres of contaminated land in Palmetto Bay into a public park and marina! Let’s make a possible Palmetto Bay Marina a model for the world as to what can happen when good people work together to achieve a great result.
