Maria Alejandra Castaño: Passionate Leadership at Loretta & the Butcher

Coconut Grove, Miami’s oldest neighborhood, has quietly evolved into one of South Florida’s most successful business communities – and it’s no accident. With its blend of charm, strategy, and community, the Grove offers a blueprint for how local economies can thrive.

At the heart of its success is a strong sense of community. And at the heart of the Grove’s bustling downtown district are independent businesses, like Loretta and the Butcher on Commodore Plaza, with Maria Alejandra Castaño at the helm.

By cultivating a loyal customer base that values authenticity and true connection, Castaño’s quaint bistro tucked between the busy shops and other businesses on Commodore Plaza has fast become a beloved neighborhood staple.

“Since the very beginning, we wanted to be more than just a restaurant. We’ve built real relationships with our guests and with other businesses in the Grove. We know their names, their favorite dishes, and make each visit one that feels like they’re home.” The loyalty and warmth of their customers continue to fuel the restaurant’s growth.

    Culinary Passion

With a passion for Argentine cuisine and making guests feel at home, she’s created a fine restaurant that’s a one way ticket to Buenos Aires. Her journey proves that with the right ingredients, vision, and boldness, anything is possible.

Beyond perfecting beef, Loretta & the Butcher honors an iconic Argentine culinary tradition, led by the passionate and determined Castaño. As a powerful woman in a male-dominated industry, she runs a restaurant that embodies authenticity, quality, and community in the deepest sense.

Castaño’s love for food began in her childhood, growing up in Colombia where meals are a symbol of unity and tradition. “Since I was a little girl, cooking has been my passion and my way of expression. And I’ve always been fascinated by how the right dish can tell a story, awaken emotions, and bring people together.”

Her admiration for Argentina’s beloved cuisine eventually led her to acquire Loretta & the Butcher, where she brings the essence of la parrilla (Argentine grill) to the Grove. With respect for each cut of meat and a dedication to using the highest quality ingredients, she ensures each dish represents the true flavors of Argentina.

“Loretta & the Butcher is more than a restaurant; it’s a total experience. We want patrons to feel transported to Argentina through flavors, aromas, and the welcoming warmth of the atmosphere.”

What Makes an Argentine Grill Great?

A true Argentine “parrilla” is more than just grilled meats, it’s a whole ritual. “Everything starts with the highest quality cuts, cooked over fire with patience. Coarse salt is all the seasoning that’s needed to highlight the succulent meat’s true flavor.”

But beyond the food, it’s about connection. “A true parrilla is meant to be shared with friends and family, with melted provoleta, a glass of wine, and, of course, chimichurri to add the final touch. It’s about friends and family gathering around the grill, living in the moment filled with passion.” At Loretta & the Butcher, every meal is designed to capture that spirit.

    Breaking Restaurant Industry Barriers

Running a restaurant as a woman comes with some challenges, but Castaño has always met them head-on with the utmost confidence and perseverance. “The biggest challenge has been breaking biases and stereotypes in a typically male-dominated industry, and proving that female leadership is equally strong and strategic.”

Balancing her roles as a businesswoman, mother, and wife is no easy feat, but Castaño has cultivated a restaurant known for both excellence and inclusivity. “Seeing Loretta and the Butcher grow, curating a unique experience, and being passionate about leadership shows that you can balance those three crucial roles without giving up your dreams.”

    The True Taste of Argentina

Loretta & the Butcher’s menu is specifically curated to immerse their guests in the authentic Argentine flavor. Signature dishes include bife de chorizo, ojo de bife, and entraña, all grilled to perfection.

Another standout is Arroz del Gaucho, a bold, comforting dish that echoes Argentina’s rich culinary traditions, alongside their world-famous empanadas, crispy on the outside, boasting a variety of fillings, and bursting with flavor inside. Each dish transports guests straight to Buenos Aires, one bite at a time.

What’s Next for Loretta & the Butcher?

Looking ahead, Maria Alejandra envisions expanding Loretta & the Butcher while maintaining its warm and welcoming atmosphere. “We’re exploring new opportunities to bring our delicious dishes to even more people, all without losing the signature warmth that defines us.”

Her journey is far from over, and that passion burns bright, strong as ever. “Oh, I believe the best is yet to come,” she says.

Effortless Chic and Laid-Back Luxury: Natalie Pons and the Art of Everyday Elegance

Fashion is confidence, creativity and self-expression – and few embody that philosophy quite like Natalie Pons. As the founder and creative force behind Wardrobe & More, a beautifully curated boutique gracefully tucked into the corner of Grand Avenue and Fuller Street in Coconut Grove, Pons has turned her love of timeless style into a thriving community hub.

More than just a place to shop, Wardrobe & More is a celebration of individuality, connection and style with substance. With a sharp eye for unique, elevated pieces and a deep commitment to showcasing female-led brands, Natalie has created a space where fashion feels effortless and personal – where finding “something special” is part of a relaxed, inspired experience.

At the heart of it all is Natalie herself – a tastemaker, entrepreneur and community-builder whose easy elegance makes Wardrobe & More as welcoming as it is chic.

West Coast Cool Meets Miami Soul

Born and raised in Miami, Natalie always had an eye for style, but her fashion philosophy was equally shaped by the years she spent on the West Coast. Studying in Seattle and later living in California, she was drawn to the region’s relaxed yet sophisticated aesthetic. Clothes that look put together, without trying too hard. Think classic denim, crisp button-downs, slouchy knitwear and that perfect “borrowed-from-the-boys” tailoring that just works.

“I’ve always loved Diane Keaton,” she shares. “The way she wore those oversized blazers and trousers in Woody Allen movies – there was an ease to it, but it still felt chic.” That balance is exactly what she brings to her boutique.

After a successful 15-year career in marketing and PR, Natalie yearned for something more personal, something tactile. So, in 2015, she took a leap of faith and opened The Wardrobe, a boutique dedicated to well-made, easy-to-wear fashion. It was an instant hit. But by 2020, she felt the store had outgrown its original vision.

“Fashion is just one part of how we express ourselves,” she says. “Our homes, our routines, our little daily rituals – they all play a role as well.”

So she expanded: The Wardrobe became Wardrobe & More, a concept store that now offers home goods, pantry staples, books and artwork. Because, as Natalie puts it, “Why stop at just dressing well when you can live well, too?”

    Effortless, Elevated Essentials

When it comes to fashion, Natalie believes in timeless essentials over trends. The racks at Wardrobe & More reflect just that: perfectly worn-in denim, crisp poplin shirts, cozy yet refined knitwear and pieces that transition seamlessly from one season (or one occasion) to the next.

“I’m all about investment pieces,” she says. “Things you can wear over and over again that always feel fresh.”

The “more” is just as thoughtfully curated. The boutique is stocked with hand-thrown pottery from independent makers, specialty pantry items that zhuzh up everyday meals and books that inspire creativity and exploration. It’s all part of her belief that style is equally about what you put on as it is about the life you create around it.

And at the core of it all? Women. Nearly every brand in the store is female-founded –  a deliberate decision Natalie made from the start.

    The Coconut Grove Lifestyle

Coconut Grove is a natural extension of Natalie’s brand. With its leafy streets, historic charm and effortlessly cool energy, the neighborhood embodies everything Wardrobe & More stands for.

“The Grove is a place where people walk everywhere, where things move at a slower, more intentional pace,” she says. “I love that. Even our customers who drive in, once they’re here, we encourage them to take a walk, grab a coffee, soak it all in.”

    Style, and Make It Personal

Natalie has created a space where style feels easy, shopping is personalized and every customer leaves with something that feels just right for them.

“We’re not about trends,” she says. “We’re about finding pieces that fit into your life.”

In a world that’s increasingly digital, there’s something refreshing about a store that invites you to slow down, browse and connect. Natalie isn’t just selling clothes – she’s curating a lifestyle. One that’s as effortless as a linen dress on an April afternoon, as chic as a well-tailored blazer and as inviting as brunch with friends.

Flamingo Gardens To Unveil Everglades Outdoor Classroom On May 28

New outdoor experience connects communities to conservation through immersive Everglades exploration

Flamingo Gardens, in collaboration with the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) with support from the Community Foundation of Broward, will officially open the Everglades Outdoor Classroom with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, May 28, at 10 a.m. This new outdoor learning experience invites guests of all ages to explore the heart of the Everglades through interactive exhibits and educational programming designed to foster a lifelong love of nature and conservation.

The Everglades Outdoor Classroom is a companion to the recently launched Nature Explore: Outdoor Exhibit at MODS in Fort Lauderdale. Together, these two sites create a dual-campus experience that highlights Broward County’s native ecosystems and supports environmental awareness across South Florida.

“By connecting communities through conservation, the Everglades Outdoor Classroom serves as a living laboratory where children and families can discover the beauty and importance of the Everglades,” said Keith Clark, CEO of Flamingo Gardens. “This initiative represents a shared commitment to preserving Florida’s natural heritage while empowering the next generation of environmental stewards.”

Set within the lush grounds of Flamingo Gardens, the Everglades Outdoor Classroom features hands-on learning zones where guests can investigate Everglades habitats, learn about native and invasive species, and explore the interconnectivity of humans with plants and animals in the Everglades ecosystem. The experience encourages scientific inquiry and environmental responsibility, aligning with state education standards and enhancing STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning opportunities for local schools and youth programs.

The Everglades Outdoor Classroom and the accompanying Nature Explore: Outdoor Exhibit at MODS highlight our vital connection to nature, focusing on the Florida Wildlife Corridor and the effects of urban sprawl on native ecosystems. While MODS explores urban habitats, Flamingo Gardens immerses guests in the rich biodiversity of the Everglades, emphasizing the importance of conservation and habitat protection. Through interpretive signage, hands-on learning activities and the use of natural materials that reflect the landscape, this outdoor space provides a dynamic environment for both facilitated and self-guided exploration. The experience reinforces how backyards and local green spaces serve as critical extensions of the Florida Wildlife Corridor, helping maintain habitat connectivity for native species such as the Florida panther, bald eagle, butterflies like the zebra longwing, atala, and cloudless sulphur, along with plants and other pollinators.

“The Everglades Outdoor Classroom is a shining example of how community collaboration and visionary philanthropy can bring transformative educational experiences to life,” said Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson, Ph.D., president & CEO, Community Foundation of Broward. “By connecting children and families to the wonder of the Everglades, we’re nurturing a deeper understanding of our environment and inspiring the next generation of conservation leaders. This project reflects the passion of local philanthropists who believe in protecting our natural resources and ensuring a thriving, sustainable future for Broward County.”

Support for the Everglades Outdoor Classroom has been provided by the following Funds at the Community Foundation of Broward: Mary N. Porter Community Impact Fund, Mary and Alex MacKenzie Community Impact Fund, and The Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation Broward Community Fund. Additional support has been provided by the State of Florida, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservations Commission, Bass Pro Shop, & Cabela’s Outdoor Fund, Brooks and Joan Fortune Family Foundation, Helen Ingham Foundation, Lakeside Foundation, and numerous private donors.

The Everglades Outdoor Classroom is included with general admission tickets to Flamingo Gardens. For more information, please visit flamingogardens.org.

Introducing a limited collection of 48 thoughtfully crafted residences ranging from one- to three-bedrooms, Hollywood Moon delivers an elevated blend of design, serenity, and modern coastal sophistication across two sculptural towers overlooking both the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway.

Developed by Unilog Group and brought to life in collaboration with Adache Group Architects, interior designer Carla Guilhem, and sales and marketing firm Powered by DMT, Hollywood Moon is a highly curated project that speaks to a new generation of buyers. Thoughtfully designed to reflect the rhythm of the tides, the project blends timeless architecture, immersive living, and seamless indoor-outdoor flow.

“This project is the physical manifestation of everything we believe in at Unilog,” said Patrick Giannini of Unilog Group. “Hollywood Moon embodies our people-first approach. It is shaped from the inside out with collaboration, purpose, and soul. It’s a space where thoughtful design meets real human connection where you can feel the magic from the moment you arrive.”

The residences range from approximately 1,100 to 2,250 square feet and feature expansive wraparound balconies, Italian-crafted kitchens with Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, spa-inspired bathrooms, and floor-to-ceiling windows that maximize natural light and views. Pricing starts at $1.1 million.

“This project is all about the glass – the floor-to-ceiling windows and doors blur the boundaries between indoors and out, offering unobstructed views of the water and lush surroundings,” said Daniel Adache, CEO, Adache Group Architects. “The glass doesn’t just frame the landscape – it reflects it. Inspired by the colors of the ocean and rooted in a tropical modern design language, we used a mix of glass and warm woods to create a contemporary, nature-infused retreat that feels both elevated and organic.”

The development includes over 20,000 square feet of curated amenities, including an infinity-edge oceanfront pool, wellness spa with steam, sauna and salon, an elevated fitness center with panoramic views, and an open-air Moon Lounge for golden-hour cocktails under the stars. A private clubhouse and business center with a chef’s kitchen, a private dining space, and work areas equipped with conference capabilities offer residents a place to both relax and connect.

“We drew inspiration from the natural beauty of the site—particularly the sunrise, sunset, and the ever-present water,” said Carla Guilhem, Founder of Carla Guilhem Interior Design. “Our goal was to create a sense of balance by bringing the outside in—reflecting the surrounding light and colors through natural materials, textures, and tones that make the interior feel as organic and serene as the landscape itself.”

Perfectly positioned between Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Sunny Isles, Hollywood Moon offers the privacy of a true retreat with the convenience of a central location. The limited collection of residences creates a sense of exclusivity designed for those who prioritize intentional living, elevated design, and a lifestyle rooted in both tranquility and connection.

“Hollywood Moon checks every box for today’s discerning buyers—location, lifestyle, and limited inventory,” said Alyssa Soto, Co-Founder of Powered by DMT. “Opportunities with this level of design and access to both the ocean and Intracoastal are incredibly rare.  We anticipate strong interest from both local and international buyers who recognize the long-term value of a property like this.”

Set to break ground in Q4 2025, with an expected completion in Q4 2027, Hollywood Moon ushers in a new era of people-first luxury, rooted in collaboration and crafted to elevate everyday living through thoughtful design, intuitive amenities, and a deep connection to place.

“It was a night to remember, thanks to our generous partners and supporters who help us raise the funds needed to maximize educational opportunities in Broward County Public Schools,” said James A. Knapp, president and CEO of Broward Education Foundation.

The celebration also featured the presentation of the annual “Heart of Broward” award, which was accepted by Juliet Roulhac, director of external affairs for Florida Power & Light’s Broward and Southwest region and director of corporate philanthropy for NextEra Energy Inc.

Memorial Neuroscience Institute Begins Stroke Awareness Month by Honoring Patients, EMS Crews

Stroke Survivors Reunited with First Responders at Recognition Event

Maddy Jean Louis and Broward Sherriff’s Office Special Ops Unit members were once again atop the Memorial Regional Hospital helipad, but that’s where the similarities to the last time they were together end.

The teenager, her mom, Renise, and neuro-interventionalist Dr. Norman Ajiboye greeted the BSO team as they arrived in Hollywood by helicopter for an event recognizing the life-saving care they and other agencies provide stroke victims in Broward County. Jean Louis was walking, smiling, and climbed into the helicopter, quite the contrast from when the same crew had to airlift the teen to Memorial after a major stroke left her completely incapacitated.

Jean Louis was one of several stroke survivors in attendance as Memorial Neuroscience Institute honored local EMS crews for the rapid response and early care that gives stroke victims the best opportunity to survive and recover. The event, which took place on the first day of National Stroke Awareness Month, specifically reunited first responders that included BSO and representatives of the cities of Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, Davie, Miramar, and Sunrise with the individuals whose lives they helped save.

“We’ve worked very hard to ensure there is a coordinated effort between EMS teams and Memorial to do everything possible to get stroke victims the care they need as quickly as possible, with the goal being to completely reverse any deficits the stroke causes,” said Dr. Brijesh P. Mehta, Medical Director, Comprehensive Stroke Program, and Chief of Neurointerventional Surgery. “Some of those at this event wouldn’t have lived or even survived without significant disabilities if their symptoms hadn’t been recognized early and clinical teams not acted fast.”

In the United States, someone has a stroke every 40 seconds, and every 3.5 minutes someone dies from the interruption of blood flow to the brain. Stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death and the leading cause of long-term disability nationwide.

The stroke Noelia Gutierrez suffered came just eight days after the birth of her third child and had her nearly comatose upon arrival at Memorial Hospital West. Caused by a complete blockage of the artery supplying blood to the brain stem, the then 29-year-struggled with multi-tasking after the crisis but ultimately regained her abilities and returned to a career in nursing. Today, she is a spokesperson for the American Stroke Association, dedicating her efforts to raising stroke awareness in the Hispanic community through the B.E.F.A.S.T. (Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech, Time) and RÁPIDO programs that teach the public to act quickly when stroke symptoms appear. For her efforts, Gutierrez was honored with the first “Stroke Ambassador Award.”

Memorial Neuroscience Institute offers advanced diagnoses, comprehensive treatment, compassionate care, and rehabilitation for complex neurological conditions. Few centers can match the depth of its neurological expertise or the wide range of available services.

Part of the Memorial Healthcare System and recognized for its quality and safety, the institute treats conditions of the brain that include Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, tumors, epilepsy, stroke, and subarachnoid hemorrhages, as well as issues of the neck, back, and spine.
