Distribution part of employee effort to help bridge the digital divide and equip 30,000 students nationwide with supplies before they head back to school

AT&T* and Compudopt provided Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami with 150 refurbished laptops and backpacks stuffed with school supplies today to distribute to Miami students and families in need.

“We are fortunate to have AT&T as a partner as we bridge the digital divide and make sure our Littles are equipped for a successful school year,” said Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami President & CEO Gale Nelson. “These laptops will connect them to a world of possibilities because the “stage” is never too BIG for our Littles!”

This event is part of a broader AT&T employee effort to help bridge the digital divide and distribute 30,000 backpacks filled with school supplies and laptops to students in qualifying households before they head back to school. The backpacks included supplies like notebooks, pencils and headphones, as well as cards of encouragement written by AT&T employees.

“AT&T is proud to collaborate with organizations like the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami to help level the playing field for students in Miami,” said Rashad Thomas, regional director, external & legislative affairs, AT&T Florida. “Connectivity is vital for students, and we’re glad we can provide these resources to those that need them most.”

According to U.S. Census Bureau data, millions nationwide still don’t have access to the internet or connected devices needed to fully participate in the online world, an issue known as the digital divide.

This effort is part of AT&T’s initiative  to help address the digital divide through internet accessibility, affordability and safe adoption. AT&T is committing $5 billion to help 25 million people get and stay connected to high-speed internet by 2030.
