The Deering Estate’s engaging Artist-in-Residence Program (AIR) has launched the application for the 2024 season.
A call to artists has opened for the Deering Estate AIR Program for visual, literary, performing, and cross-disciplinary artists. Artists are invited to apply before the deadline of Aug. 31, 11:59 p.m. EST. The application is for studio residencies and non-studio project residencies at the Deering Estate that begin as early as Jan. 15, 2024.
The Deering Estate seeks to continue Charles Deering’s legacy of art patronage by supporting emerging and mid-career artists who work in various disciplines and media. The prestigious and competitive AIR Program is a direct extension of this legacy. It is a wonderful incubator for creative ideas, unique experiences, and collaborative opportunities that engage the public.
Interested artists must complete a formal application, which is available online at https://deeringestate.slideroom.com/#/Login. A printable Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document is available on the Deering Estate website at https://deeringestate.org/arts/artists-in-residence/ to assist applicants with answers to common questions.
Eligibility information is listed within the FAQ and application format. Please read carefully to choose the appropriate residency type.
No cost is associated with the application process or residency program.
This program allows professional artists to pursue their artistic discipline, create a body of work, connect with other artists, and engage the public while interacting with the historical, archeological, and natural elements of the estate’s inspiring environment. Artists are encouraged to interact with the public during studio hours whenever possible. Other benefits include access to archives, education and interpretive staff, and potential grant partnership opportunities.
The AIR program offers its residents free access to the site and/or studio space for extended periods on the beautiful, inspiring, and historic site. Collaboration with other residents, estate programs, and partners is encouraged and welcomed. Each artist studio is slightly different but provides space in one of the historic buildings for two to 12 months.
Shared and collaborative residences are welcome and the program seeks to include a broad scope of contemporary and traditional artistic practices. The residence does not provide for overnight housing, and artists must provide their supplies.
Deering Estate is located at 16701 SW 72 Ave. in Palmetto Bay.
