Throughout December, visitors can tour the elegant and historic houses at the Deering Estate, 16701 SW 72 Ave., as they come alive with holiday accents and decorations. The “Historic Holidays” exhibit is an annual tradition and a special project of local garden clubs and community organizations that brings the warmth of the holiday season to this unique site in Palmetto Bay.
Complementing the seasonal display, a special collection highlight features formal and fanciful works by Catalan Artist Ramon Casas i Carbó (1866-1932). The exhibit shares lighthearted sketches produced during the artist’s travels with estate founder and arts patron Charles Deering and brings attention to the artist’s formal painting and drawings in the estate’s permanent collection.
Museus de Sitges, a cultural consortium in Spain and Deering Estate’s sister institution, has been honoring the 150th birthday of Ramon Casas through a yearlong series of exhibitions in Catalonia. The Deering Estate joins in the celebration by highlighting the unique friendship between Charles Deering and Ramon Casas. The Charles Deering Library at Northwestern University is helping to make this exhibition possible.
Participating groups include: 100 Ladies of Deering, Coral Pines Garden Club, Dadeland Garden Club, Ken Pines Garden Club, MacArthur South Family and Consumer Sciences Department 4H, Palmetto Bay Garden Club, Pinecrest Garden Club, South Miami Garden Club, Sunset Park Garden Club and The Florida Association of Family and Consumer Sciences-District J.
The holiday decorations will be on display Dec. 1-Jan. 6, 2017, daily, from 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. The exhibit is included with regular estate admission: $12 for adults, $7 for children (ages 4-14), and free for Deering Estate Foundation members. Please note that the Deering Estate will be closed on Christmas Day.
There are additional holiday events scheduled throughout the month of December, such as the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, Story-Time & Photos with Santa, and Holiday Lights at Deering.
