The Deering Estate “Contemporary Currents” series is an annual program that integrates contemporary art with collections and historic houses.

Artists are selected from the roster of past and current Artists-in-Residence at the Deering Estate to display their work on the second floor of the Richmond Cottage for a three- to six-month period.

For the upcoming exhibition, the Deering Estate will feature new work by Pangea Kali Virga (Deering Estate Artist-in-Residence, 2023-24). The exhibition “To Be Dwellers With This Land” consists of printed silk embroidered images displayed in The Garden Room — a charming wooden alcove inside the Richmond Cottage at Deering Estate.

“To Be Dwellers With This Land” will be on view from May 1 to July 20 in the Garden Room of the Richmond Cottage at Deering Estate. An opening reception for the artist will take place on Saturday, May 10, from 3 to 5 p.m., in the Garden Room at the Richmond Cottage.

Tickets for the opening reception are free and can be accessed through Eventbrite.com.

About the artist:
Pangea Kali Virga crafts experiential, dreamy, and fantastical worlds using fiber and community as her medium. Patchworked, embroidered, distressed, and woven, her work recontextualizes waste and beauty, inspiring play, curiosity, and action. Ornate and resilient, each stitch holds intention, every fiber meticulously collaged. Layered and maximalist, her textures beckon touch and closer examination in a rainbow of colors.

Her work ranges from wall hangings, installations, sweeping 30-foot gowns, and delicate palm-sized fiber collages — all created from upcycled materials. Rooted in nature, literature, and equity, her zero-waste practice challenges consumerist systems through workshops, lectures, and large-scale public art, fostering transparency and collective engagement.

The Deering Estate is located at 16701 SW 72 Ave. in Palmetto Bay.
