The Village of Palmetto Bay conducted a “Hybrid Public Informational Meeting regarding the Resilience Action Plan” at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Apr. 30, at the Village Hall Municipal Center.

Besides the opportunity to attend in person, the one-hour PowerPoint presentation was live-streamed on the village’s website and on the village Facebook page. It was not an official meeting of the village council, and no official action was taken during the workshop.

The first of two public meetings to be held throughout the process was designed to give a public update on progress so far while allowing guests to ask village staff and the consultants WSP any questions they might have.

The village received a Resilient Florida Program grant to develop a community-wide vulnerability assessment, fulfilling a prerequisite for receiving program implementation funding in the future. This assessment involves identifying critical assets, assessing flood risks, and evaluating the exposure and sensitivity of critical assets to these flood risks.
Vice Mayor Leanne Tellam, who attended, spoke.

“No.1, I’d like to point out that we have two fire stations, one across the street here and one relatively new one on Old Cutler Road and 144th,” Tellam said.

“No. 2, I’m questioning whether when we’re doing our vulnerable asset inventory, that might not be the right nomenclature, but are we including the land within the Deering Estate which is a large Miami-Dade County public park, because you included the Chinese Bridge, which is our historic bridge. But, if we’re including their land, then there would be two or three more canoe and paddleboard launches, and then the third thing that I noted was that if we’re looking at vulnerable assets I would look at group homes for the elderly or infirm and we’ve got a rehab center that’s on US1 by Palmetto Bay Park.”

The moderator explained that some parts that are county property were included because they are within the village’s boundaries. There were no questions from the streaming audience.
