Miami-Dade Commission Vice Chair Lynda Bell, along with her staff and dedicated volunteers, distributed more than 500 school backpacks filled with essential school supplies to financially disadvantaged children who reside in Commission District 8 on Saturday, Aug. 10, at Camp Owaissa Bauer in the Redland.
“It was indeed a pleasure to continue this tradition of giving back to the community by helping to provide needy families with the necessary materials to start their children’s school year right,” Bell said.
“This annual event, which is now in its third year, could not have been possible without the generosity of respected corporate sponsors like Baptist Health South Florida, the Coca-Cola Company, United Teachers of Dade and Marriott,” Bell added.
“Their invaluable assistance will go a long way toward making these children’s school year a success. Building on last year’s successful event, we brought together a great number of community organizations throughout South Dade who offered our residents an educational resource fair, complete with health screenings provided by Baptist Health, as well as plenty of food and fun activities for the kids to enjoy.”
Given the uncertainty of the local and national economies, many families often have to sacrifice some of their children’s school materials, which are necessary for their success. For these reasons Bell brought together the private and public sectors of the community for a common purpose — to help as many children in her district obtain the educational edge they need. The school backpacks were filled with notebooks and folders, rulers, pens, pencils, glue sticks, etc.
