Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced on July 7, the appointment of Miami-Dade County School Board member Roberto J. Alonso to the Metropolitan Planning Organization of Miami-Dade County, also known as Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization (TPO).

The TPO plays a powerful role in the transportation planning process in Miami-Dade County.

It is responsible for the approval and oversight of all policy matters, plans, programs, budgets, agreements, contracts, rules and operating structures concerning transportation in Miami-Dade.

School Board member Alonso’s appointment as the School Board’s representative to the TPO fills in the vacancy created by the retirement of former School Board chair Ms. Perla Tabares Hantman. Board member Alonso began his tenure on the school board on Nov. 22, 2022, after an electoral victory in District 4 on Aug. 23, 2022.

“I am honored and thrilled to have been appointed by Gov. DeSantis to serve on the Miami-Dade TPO. I look forward to representing the residents of Miami-Dade County,” Alonso said.

Board member Alonso is a native of Hialeah. He serves on the board of trustees at Miami-Dade College (MDC). He holds an Associate in Arts from MDC and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Florida International University.

Alonso is a business entrepreneur with a history of strong commitment to community service and philanthropy. He currently serves as vice chair of the school board’s Facilities and Construction Committee. He is past vice chair of the Town of Miami Lakes’ Charter Review Committee, past chair of the Town of Miami Lakes’ Public Safety Committee, and past president of the Royal Oaks Homeowners Association.

He also is a founding member of Miami Lakes Cars for a Cure, a not-for-profit organization that produces community events to raise funds for local cancer research, where he also serves as president and Event Operations manager.
