Can you calculate the area of a rectangle or explain the difference between comets and asteroids?

Those are the kinds of questions contestants in The Education Fund’s version of “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” will answer in the virtual competition starting at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26. The one-hour event presented by Ocean Bank features adult contestants matching wits with fifth graders. The winners will take home prizes and raise money for The Education Fund Ocean Bank Center for Educational Materials.

“Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” will feature local business executives from Ocean Bank, Sapoznik Insurance, PNC Bank, The Children’s Trust, Wells Fargo, GMCVB, TD Bank, Humana, Kaufman Rossin, Bradesco BAC Florida Bank, The Miami Foundation, FPL, Pinnacle, and the Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation competing against fifth-grade students to answer questions in the categories of STEM, health/wellness, social studies, and the arts.

“We loved the idea of putting adults and students to the test – together,” said Linda Lecht, president of The Education Fund. “We hope everyone will join us. This is a fun way of raising funds for The Education Fund Ocean Bank Center, which supplies public school students and their families with essential supplies.”

The Education Fund Ocean Bank Center for Educational Materials in Medley is an 11,000-square-foot warehouse designed to provide public school teachers with supplies for their classrooms and students.

In response to COVID-19, The Education Fund initiated a new three-pronged distribution process getting Ocean Bank Center supplies to students and families via teacher drive-thrus, “truckload deliveries” to schools, and through partnerships with more than 55 nonprofits.

In addition to a variety of educational materials, The Education Fund Ocean Bank Center now provides cleaning supplies, household goods, and masks, with $3.7 million in supplies distributed since March 2020, nearly four times what is normally distributed to students.

This year, “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” replaces The Education Fund’s popular student and teacher art auction that raises about $200,000 for the Ocean Bank Center, which is held at the end of each school year.
