On Aug. 16, before the start of school, the Village of Palmetto Bay and the Eureka Drive location of Ocaquatics Swim School once again teamed up to provide backpacks loaded with school supplies to local students.

Mayor Karyn Cunningham initiated a backpack giveaway program in 2017 to benefit underprivileged children, prompted by her background as a teacher in the school system.

Ocaquatics, led by owner Miren Oca, has participated in the effort as has the village’s policing unit.

The school supplies were donated by families in the area and everyone worked together to sort and divide them among the backpacks for distribution. This year a total of 50 backpacks were donated, thanks to the effort.

Miren Oca was pleased they were able to do it once more this year.

“We are grateful to have this opportunity again to work with the mayor and the police department of Palmetto Bay for the school supply drive,” Oca said. “When students have new backpacks and their own school supplies, they have the confidence they need to start off the new school year well. We are proud that our Ocaquatics families always respond with great generosity to help us collect so many resources for any children who need them.”

Mayor Karyn Cunningham also was pleased with how well the partnership worked.

“This is the seventh year that I have partnered with our village police and Ocaquatics to deliver 50 backpacks and supplies to the schools in the village,” Mayor Cunningham said.

“It is our small way of showing our commitment to make sure every student in our village schools is set for success as they begin the school year.”

The loaded backpacks were handed out at Howard Drive Elementary, Coral Reef Elementary, Southwood Middle School and Dr. Henry E. Perrine Academy of the Arts.
Ocaquatics Swim School – Eureka is located at 11101 SW 176 St.
