Construction efforts being done through the Department of Public Works on drainage projects to reduce flooding in low-lying areas of Palmetto Bay continue, according to village staff.
Years ago, large portions of the village were subject to standing water after storms, but real progress has been made. Although drainage improvements have been completed in the area of SW 77th Court, ongoing work in the Sub Basin 10 Drainage Project is still taking place.
Additional catch basins and exfiltration trenches placed at low points in the roadway, with connections to drainage wells, are intended to reduce standing water in the area.
As of June 23 a total of two catch basins, two manholes and a 65-foot-long trench have been installed along SW 89th Avenue between 155th Terrace and 153rd Terrace. Depending upon weather delays, workers may still be present there. Drivers should be especially careful in this area.
The expected completion date is Nov. 18. Other projects in the drainage improvement program may be pending, but their locations have not been finalized yet.
