The Alhambra Orchestra will present the top finsihers in its annual concerto competition for middle and high school students, displaying the concertos they performed for a panel of eminent judges.
For this event on Sunday, Feb. 12, 7:30 p.m., at Florida International University’s Wertheim Auditorium, 10910 SW 17 St., there is free admission and plenty of parking at reasonable rates. No tickets or reservations are needed.
The winners will be accompanied by the orchestra under the baton of artistic director Daniel Andai, and the concert also will feature Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro Overture and Finlandia by Sibelius. The soloists are: third place finisher Matthew Hakkarainen, performing Saint-Saens’ Violin Concerto No. 3; second place finsher Sophia Zheng with the Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D, and first place finisher Laura Liu with William Walton’s Viola Concerto.
Liu is a student at Ransom-Everglades School in Miami. Hakkarainen and Zheng are both students at Dreyfoos School of the Arts in Palm Beach County.
