The Deering Estate seeks to continue Charles Deering’s legacy of art patronage by supporting emerging and mid-career artists who work in a multitude of disciplines and media.
The prestigious and competitive Artist in Residence program is a direct extension of this legacy and acts as an incubator for creative ideas, unique experiences, and collaborative opportunities that engage the public.
The Deering Estate has announced the recipients of this year’s residency opportunities. Studio Residencies are housed in the Artist Village buildings, Carriage House and Power House, and were awarded to multidisciplinary artists Skip Snow, Valerie LeBlanc and Daniel H. Dugas, design-based collective Home Eleven by Nelly Bonilla and Oscar Luna; visual artists John William Bailly, Frida Baranek, Steven Pestana and Ralph Provisero.
Project Residencies consist of specific interactions with the estate and its resources and were awarded to photographers Carlos Domenech and Jonathan Brooks, painter Lorie Ofir, and plein air painter Jacqueline Gopie.

The Artist in Residence program currently welcomes professional visual, performing, and literary artists who are self-motivated and focused. The primary basis for selection of the artists is the strength and quality of the applicant’s work as well as a clear objective for the time of their residency.
Both Studio Residencies and Non-Studio Project Residencies are available and are competitively selected through a jury process using leading professionals from our family of galleries, collaborative arts, and cultural organizations. In conjunction with a curatorial project this season, the estate encouraged applications from Sci-Artists (scientists, artists, and professionals who identify as both) to explore practices that include: New technologies, scientific data, micro-generated imagery, and art-making with the ethic of sustainability, conservation, and preservation.
As evident from Artist in Residence alumni, the Deering Estate Artist in Residence Program has been a catalyst for artistic practice and recognition including additional residencies, national and local grants, gallery representation, collection acquisitions, and community engagement.
