Discover what Deering Estate has to offer on Deering Discovery Day

July is Park and Recreation Month and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) challenges you to explore the “undiscovered” roles of local parks and recreation, such as science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programming, innovative health and wellness opportunities, community celebrations, outdoor education and more.

In celebration of Park and Recreation Month, A Lifetime of Discovery, admission to the Deering Estate, 16701 SW 72 Ave., on Sunday, July 15, is only $1 for ages 4 and older as part of Deering Discovery Days. Enjoy a day of family fun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with hands-on science activities, site orientations, mini-canoe tours (for an additional fee) and more.

Guests also can take part in the Deering Estate BioBlitz from noon to 2 p.m. This activity encourages environmental discovery and stewardship. Participants of all ages will work with experts to seek out and identify diverse plants and animals found in South Florida. Be sure to Download iNaturalist, a free app accessible by any smart phone, and start identifying the species around you. Join the “Deering Estate Project” on iNaturalist and have fun exploring.

The Deering Estate preserves the 1920s era Miami estate of Charles Deering, Chicago industrialist, early preservationist, environmentalist, art collector, philanthropist and first chairman of the International Harvester Company.

Nestled along the coast in South Dade, the Deering Estate is a 21st Century museum destination, environmental preserve and historic site listed on the National Register of Historic Places. From canoe tours to butterfly walks and guided museum and natural areas tours, the Deering Estate has diverse activities for the whole family to enjoy.
