A opening reception for “Healing Waters,” Photography by JohnBob Carlos, exhibition will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Deering Estate, 16701 SW 72 Ave.
The event is free and open to the public and includes performances that begin at 7:30 p.m. RSVP is preferred on Eventbrite. The exhibition will be on view from Oct. 17 through Jan. 5, 2019, daily, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is free with estate admission.
Honoring founder Charles Deering’s role as an early naturalist and environmental advocate, this exhibition brings to light the contemporary artist’s role in advocacy and action to save Florida’s natural waters, preserve sacred spaces, and reconnect people to the land.
JohnBob Carlos aptly titled the photographic series “Healing Waters,” stemming from his desire to move people to find self-healing from immersion in the environment and healing for our Everglades and waters systems. With vibrant images of the Everglades waters, he hopes that the viewers find images that serve as emblems to inspire healing in their lives.
“May these images serve as a reminder of the natural beauty that is here now and can be saved for future generations,” Carlos said.
Join in on a journey of sights, sounds, dance and traditions celebrating the “Healing Waters” theme with cultural and artistic presenters, including the following: featured artist JohnBob Carlos, interdisciplinary traditional artist Tara Chadwick, Community Elders, Olijimi Dance interpretations by Choreographer Michelle Grant-Murray, and music and prayers with Wayne William Snellgrove.

JohnBob Carlos is a native Floridian and photographer capturing images of Florida’s wildlife, landscapes, cultures and waterways. It is his way of creating a voice for Florida’s nature and preserving Florida’s culture. Canvassing the depth of Florida’s natural terrain, he has been able to capture and document the beauty of such landscapes in a compelling and visually stunning format.
In recent years he has become deeply concerned about the state of Florida’s nature, alarmed at the devastation of these areas, mostly due to money, development, pollution, business and politics.
Although his focus is photography, his role is in a state of evolution due to his need to defend Florida’s wildlife and stand up for nature through the use of his art and voice. JohnBob Carlos’ work has been used for petitions to stop big oil and fracking, to save the pine rocklands, to support clean water initiatives, and to oppose bike roads that destroy the fragile Everglades.
