Moonrise viewing to take place at the Deering Estate, May 18

The Southern Cross Astronomical Society (SCAS) presents a moonrise viewing at the Deering Estate, 16701 SW 72 Ave., on Saturday, May 18, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Bring a picnic and chairs/blanket to enjoy a relaxing evening with family and friends as you watch the full moon rise over Biscayne Bay. The Southern Cross Astronomical Society will have telescopes on site to view the moon up close.

Cost is $10 for ages 4 and older; free for Deering Estate Foundation members. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling 305-235-1668, ext. 233. Tickets are nonrefundable, rain or shine.

The Deering Estate preserves the 1920s era Miami estate of Charles Deering, Chicago industrialist, early preservationist, environmentalist, art collector, philanthropist and first chairman of the International Harvester Company.

The Deering Estate is a 21st Century house museum, cultural and ecological field station, and a national landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, owned by the State of Florida and managed by Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department.

From canoe tours to bird walks, and guided museum and nature preserve tours, the Deering Estate has diverse activities for the whole family to enjoy.

The Southern Cross Astronomical Society (SCAS), originally founded in 1922 as the Southern Cross Observatory, is one of the oldest amateur astronomical societies in the Western Hemisphere.
