Cookies Make a Way for Learning Skills Essential to Life and to Success

The Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida, which serves Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties, takes its Girl Scout Cookie Program very seriously. For many, purchasing a box of their favorite cookies is something they look forward to every year, but it is important to note what each box of cookies really represents.

Girl Scout Cookies are an icon of American culture and the backbone of the Girl Scout Cookie Program, the leading entrepreneurial program for girls which generates $790 million in annual sales. The proceeds support Girl Scouts and local community projects. When people buy a box of cookies, they are buying much more; they are investing in a girl’s future. By purchasing cookies, the community is helping a girl learn skills essential to life and to success. These vital fundraising dollars help Girl Scouts learn:

• Goal Setting

• Decision Making

• Money Management

• People Skills

• Business Ethics.

“We teach our Girl Scouts how to be successful at whatever they do and try to give them the preliminary business skills necessary to achieve their goals. That is why so many of our alumnae are entrepreneurs and businesswomen, and credit their start and motivation on the skills learned through the Girl Scouts. They also realize that each box of cookies helps fund so many key programs for the organization. We are proud that our cookie program represents so much more,” stated Maria D. Tejera, Chief Executive Officer of the Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida.

Customers also have the option of purchasing cookies for the Cookies from the Heart Program, which donates the cookies to the men and women serving in the military in the U.S. and around the world.

Thousands of South Florida Girl Scouts are selling Girl Scout Cookies to friends, neighbors and community members January 13 – February 13. Girl Scouts will be celebrating National Cookie Day on February 8. Cookies available for sale this year include the popular Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Do-si-dos, Trefoils, Savannah Smiles, and new this year Rah-Rah Raisin, an oatmeal raisin cookie and Toffee-Tastic, a rich, buttery cookies packed with golden toffee bits bursting with flavor.

It is now easier than ever to find one’s favorite box of cookies with the “Cookie Locator” by visiting cookielocator.littlebrownie.com or downloading the free Cookie Locator app and entering a zip code. A full list of locations near the area will be generated.

And yes, the Girl Scout Cookie Program you know and love is going beyond the booth and offering more ways to buy cookies and support girls’ learning than ever before. This year we are happy to announce the launch of the Digital Cookie Program.

The best part is that Digital Cookie helps take the five essential life skills girls learn through the traditional cookie program to a whole new level—introducing critical lessons about online marketing, application use, and ecommerce to more than one million excited Girl Scouts, in real-time.

So how does it work? In true Girl Scout style, the girls always initiate the cookie sale. So if you know a Girl Scout, tell her you’re interested in becoming a Digital Cookie customer and she will take it from there! Please note that as we launch Digital Cookie nationally for the first time, girl participation will depend on market area, and not all girls will be participating just yet.

The Council will be kicking off the cookie sale this year with its 1st Annual Cookies Cocktail Challenge on January 15 from 6pm-8pm at CRAVE Restaurant located in Merrick Park, Coral Gables. This is a “fun-raising” event to benefit Girl Scouts across Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. The adults-only evening will feature decadent cocktails using at least one special ingredient– Girl Scout Cookies. With celebrity host and emcee NBC 6 in the Mix hostess Roxanne Vargas the event is sure not to disappoint.

The event presenting sponsors are CRAVE Restaurant and Bacardi, USA. Other event sponsors include Waste Pro of Florida, FPL, Commissioner Juan C. Zapata, Bagué Group, and Becker & Poliakoff. Misha’s Cupcakes is our dessert partner and will be creating a Samoa inspired cake to celebrate the 40th birthday of the beloved cookie. Bartenders from Christy’s Restaurant, Flannigan’s Bar & Grill, Batch Gastropub, Station 5 Table & Bar, and CRAVE Restaurant competing to be crowded the first Cookie Cocktail Challenge Champion!
