Miami-Dade Commissioner Katy Sorenson, county manager George Burgess, Palmetto Bay Mayor Eugene Flinn and village councilmembers, along with representatives of the Miami-Dade Park and Recreation Department, participated in the re-opening ceremony of “Deering Point” on June 24.

Deering Point is only a small portion (3.5 acres) of “Deering South Addition.” The South Addition, which is 34-acres, was purchased in 1985 by the State of Florida and Miami-Dade County through cost sharing by the Florida Conservation and Recreation Lands (CARL) program and Miami-Dade County Environmentally Endangered Lands Program (EEL).

The state retains title to the property and has entered into a lease agreement with the county for the Parks Department to manage the area.

Recently completed improvements consist of the installation of utilities to support future shelters and a small restroom building, drainage improvements, paving and landscaping. The total cost for these improvements was $800,000, funded by Safe Neighborhood Parks (SNP) bond sales as well as moneys from the Building Better Communities bond issue.

“Development of Deering Point was planned to provide the public with additional opportunities to enjoy the recreational and educational experiences offered by Biscayne Bay,” Commissioner Sorenson said.
