A new pet responsibility lesson offering pet care tips during natural disasters has become part of the curriculum for fourth and fifth graders at Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS).

Miami-Dade County Animal Services and MDCPS joined efforts to incorporate responsible pet care and ownership into the learning curriculum. The lesson plan focuses on the importance of having a family preparation plan for an emergency that includes keeping the family pets safe.

“Teaching students the importance of appropriate pet care means that we are also teaching them the essential life lesson of responsibility,” said superintendent of schools Albert M. Carvalho. “We welcome the opportunity to work with Miami-Dade County Animal Services to provide training and information to our students that demonstrate the appropriate ways to care for our pets and animals.”

The new classroom lesson plans began on May 18 at all public elementary schools — just in time for the start of hurricane season.

“We are very pleased to once again work with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to help reach so many children about the importance of pet care and responsibility,” said Alex Muñoz, director of Miami-Dade Animal Services.

This project, which was scripted based on M-DCPS’ lesson plan also was produced by the county’s Miami-Dade TV.
