Anthony Gorman is running for Palmetto Bay Council District 1.
Gorman has been a Palmetto Bay resident for 25 years and has been active in the community. Born in New York, he grew up traveling the world in a military family. His father was a career Navy Master Chief. He is a former Army Green Beret and a member of the Homestead Military Affairs Committee assisting local military families.
Gorman has worked in the construction industry for more than 35 years, involved mainly with federal government contracts for sustainable buildings to the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards. He believes that his background will allow him to suggest concepts that will bring sustainability to the developing Palmetto Bay Downtown area and encourage “green” initiatives throughout the village. He has been married to his wife, Pamela, for 50 years. They have two grown children, Heather and David.
All candidates were asked the following questions:
Q. If elected, what would you do in the first 100 days?
A. “Concentrate on revising the current DUV code to incorporate responsible, diversified development through resident participation and find reasonable solutions to mitigate current traffic issues. Support controlled and balanced zoning in the Downtown Palmetto Bay area aligned with residents expressed vision of living and office space, restaurants and shopping. Carefully review the current budget and forecasts to insure we are living within our means, including a careful review of the proposals for a village community center.”
Q. What motivated you to run for office?
A. “I’ve been actively involved in the village since incorporation and have frequently and continuously addressed the village council concerning my (or considered) opinions regarding various issues such as the failings of the Downtown Zoning Code, the FPL property and recent real estate purchases. It has become obvious that it is difficult to affect meaningful change speaking from the podium. I do my research, consider the input of others before making decisions.”
Q. Why do you think you would be the best candidate for the position?
A. “The Village is facing critical challenges at this time. I believe that my 35 years’ experience in construction management administration, building hundreds of millions of dollars of construction projects makes me uniquely qualified to make critical decisions that would affect our resident’s quality of life. My life experiences as an Army Green Beret indicates that I am not afraid of facing challenges and value teamwork. I have community involvement history, knowledge of the issues and desire to make Palmetto Bay a better place to live, work and play.”
