Mayor Carlos Gimenez speaks to 100 community residents

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez is welcomed by Peter England, chair of Palmetto Bay Village Voice, on June 6 at the Deering Estate in Palmetto Bay.

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez addressed a group of more than 100 South Miami-Dade County residents on June 6 at the Deering Estate at Cutler in Palmetto Bay.

The mayor was welcomed by Peter England, chair of the Palmetto Bay Village Voice, a citizen’s organization committed to transparency in government, which was the event organizer.

Mayor Gimenez spoke on a range of topics including the reorganization of county departments to the reduction of property taxes. After his comments he took questions from the audience. Among the concerns he addressed were his strong belief that the Urban Development Boundary

should remain as it is today, and that he saw no need to raise water and sewer rates in order to address the need to re-invest in those infrastructures. Those needs, he said, can be addressed with the income the county receives today from water and sewer customers, but the county needs to use that income for infrastructure and not redirect it to general revenue.

The event was open to the public and was attended by current and former government officials including County Commissioner Lynda Bell, Cutler Bay Council member Sue Ellen Loyzelle, and former Village of Palmetto Bay Council members Dr. Ed Feller and Paul Neidhart.

The community outreach event was part of an ongoing series sponsored by Palmetto Bay Village Voice.
