New fire rescue station is the topic of meeting

The village is hosting a Town Hall Meeting on Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. about the proposed Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Station No. 62, to be located at the USDA Agricultural Research Service Station, adjacent to the main building at 13621 Old Cutler Road. “This site will not require relocation of any planting areas or require major access changes to the site from Old Cutler Road,” says Mayor Stanczyk in a press release about the station. Residents may recall that this site was once under consideration as a possible location for Village Hall before the final spot was selected. We hear that Fire Chief David Downy will attend the meeting to present information and answer questions. The meeting will take place in the Council Chambers at Village Hall, 9705 East Hibiscus Street. For further information or questions prior to the meeting, contact Carlos Heredia, Planning Section supervisor for the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department by calling 786-331-4544 or by sending an email to chh@miamidade.gov.

Now hear this! Palmetto Bay’s 4th Annual Holiday Boat Parade & Canned Food Drive takes place on December 21. Organized by the Palmetto Bay Canal Association, the boats will meet at dusk at Coral Reef Park (the C100 canal), travel south through Palmetto Bay, pass Bill Sadowski Park, and complete their procession near 184 Street and 90 Avenue. Not only will the boaters spread holiday cheer along the way, they will also pick up nonperishable food items handed to them by parade observers along the banks. Don’t live on the water? No problem! Village Hall is helping event-organizers Rainer and Noel Schael by collecting canned food items at Village Hall through Dec. 20 (don’t forget that deadline).

All items collected will be delivered by the Schael’s and their helpers to the Chapman Partnership, an outstanding organization that helps empower the homeless by providing a comprehensive support program that includes emergency housing, meals, job placement and assistance, among other services. For info call Village Hall at 305-259-1234.

Keep it up… Well, the official Small Business Saturday event has come and gone, but the idea behind it of supporting the neighborhood businesses in your community, the “mom and pop” independent stores, restaurants and services, is a great thing to do year ‘round. They will appreciate your business and often provide better customer service than the big national chains. Besides, the money you spend there stays in the community and helps the local economy.

Holiday show… Those of you familiar with Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre may want to take the kids to see “Madeline’s Christmas” there. There’s an ‘All Kids Included’ Sensory-Friendly Saturday Performance on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 11 a.m., and holiday performances on Saturday, December 21 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, December 22 at 3 p.m.

The book and lyrics are by Jennifer Kirkeby, music and lyrics by Shirley Mier. This holiday favorite begins with the classic storybook line, “In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines.”

Actors’ Playhouse is located at the Miracle Theatre, 280 Miracle Mile, in Coral Gables. Call 305-444-9293 for ticket info or visit their website at www.actorsplayhouse.org.
