Village of Palmetto Bay Councilmember Karyn Cunningham announced today that she will challenge Village Mayor, Eugene Flinn, in the Village’s municipal elections in November.

“Mayor Flinn’s 2016 decision to vote in favor of building 485 homes along Old Cutler Road, knowing full-well of the detrimental effects it will have on our community’s roads, is a testament of his disregard for our community’s quality of life. His continued insistence in developing this land next to an already traffic-congested road is irresponsible and it will not go unanswered. We need elected officials who are committed to protecting Palmetto Bay. I am eager to begin a conversation about our Village’s future.”, declared Councilmember Cunningham.

“Palmetto Bay has always prided itself as a welcoming, small-town, where residents are able to escape the stresses of everyday life and enjoy their families along with the beautiful parks and recreational opportunities our community has to offer. We must get back to the basics of managing and maintaining our village. I pledge to continue to be a champion for Palmetto Bay families through a people-driven campaign for Mayor; and I am grateful for the outpouring of support for my candidacy.”, added Councilmember Cunningham.

Among her many projects and initiatives, Councilmember Karyn Cunningham is leading the way in creating a first-ever, resident-driven Strategic Plan; she is working diligently with residents and village officials to initiate the first “Park & Ride” pilot program to alleviate traffic congestion, as well as advance her proposal that increases our Village’s parks and green spaces. Karyn is also working to initiate a Safer School Zones program by increasing police presence at our public and private schools.

Karyn Cunningham was elected to Council Seat 1 on Nov. 4, 2014. A native of Miami-Dade County and a graduate of Miami Palmetto Senior High, Councilmember Cunningham graduated Cum Laude from the University of South Florida in 1985 and holds certification in Elementary Education and Psychology. She received her Urban Education Certification from Florida International University in 1987. Karyn and her family have lived in the Village of Palmetto Bay since 1995. She has one daughter, Megan. Karyn also serves on several local boards, including Chamber South, The Melissa Institute for Violence Prevention and Treatment, Common Threads and The Salvation Army.
