The Palmetto Senior High Alumni Association was established with the mission of giving back to Miami Palmetto Senior High School and in 2014 a scholarship fund was initiated by the “Class of ’61,” allowing for yearly scholarships to be awarded to graduating seniors who have been active members of the Panther community during their high school years.
On May 21, alumni Pamela Garrison (Class of ’61), Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner (’70) and Palmetto Bay Councilmember Karyn Cunningham (’81) presented four outstanding students of the Class of 2015 with a check in the amount of $1,500 as well as a lifetime membership to the Alumni Association. The recipients were Leemay Chen of Palmetto Bay, and Stephanie Levine, Meryl Kornfield and Tiffany Chen of Pinecrest.
“I am so honored to be a recipient of the Palmetto Alumni Scholarship because it gives me pride knowing that my school believes in me and my future,” Levine said. “In addition to the scholarship, the lifetime membership to the Alumni Association gives me the opportunity to stay connected to the school that has given me so much and maintain my Panther Pride for years to come. Go panthers!”
Leemay Chen added, “I am incredibly flattered to be a recipient of the Palmetto Alumni Scholarship, particularly since at Palmetto I was able to meet fantastic teachers, motivated students, and a group of people in Literary Society who shared my passions. My senior year of high school ended on a such a high note. It is so great to have been recognized.”
The members of the scholarship committee were: Pam Garrison (’61), Anita Shuffield, Tom Brown, Former Pinecrest Councilmember Jeff Cutler (’75), Palmetto Bay Councilmember Karyn Cunningham (’81) and Chris Sanderson (2000).
