There’s a lot going on this month and a number of things are being done through the Economic Development Council (EDC) so mark your calendar if these events interest you.
First is the ‘Business Training Program’ which begins on Thursday January 10, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. According to the EDC, the business training program is designed for those who want to start a business, grow a business, or simply sharpen their business skills. It is sponsored in part by the Office of Commissioner Lynda Bell and in partnership with Miami Dade College Homestead Campus. Miami Dade College Certificate of Completion awarded to attendees.
The nine classes will take place at the Palmetto Bay Village Center, on Old Cutler Road at SW 184th Street. The course covers three areas of discipline: Starting a Business, Managing a Business, and Financing a Business. A total of nine classes each 90 minutes in length that are taught by successful, local, community business leaders and academicians. Cost: $120. Next is the Martin Luther King Business Exposition on January 18 from 5 to 9 p.m. It’s also at the Palmetto Bay Village Center and will include networking and exhibits. Then the EDC’s regular monthly Community Outreach Meeting takes place on January 24, with networking at 11:30 a.m. The Speaker’s Program is from noon to 1 p.m. and is presented by the University of Florida/IFAS Miami-Dade County Cooperative Extension, Dept. of Regulatory and Economic Resources.
Sports minded? Also from the EDC, the 15th Annual Steven Cranman Golf Tournament is Friday, February 22 at the Miccosukee Golf & Country Club. After the golf is an open bar, chicken wings, BBQ chicken, a raffle with some great prizes and of course the awards. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. The Cranman Tennis Tournament takes place the same day and location, in the morning. The deadline in participating in either is January 30, so don’t delay! A different kind of resolution from the Village Council. Vice Mayor John DuBois shared his with us:
“My New Year’s resolution is to get the residents of Palmetto Bay to believe the village government is there to help and serve the people so they will think of the village council and staff as customer service agents,” said DuBois.
Tim Schaffer, the newly elected Council Member of District 2, had his own view of the tradition: “I’m not one for New Years resolutions. To me every new day should have a resolution to do better than the previous day,” said Schaffer.
We were saddened to hear that Dr. Jacquelyn Thomas Hartley passed away on Friday, December 14th at age 78, after many years of service to her country and community, in locations here and abroad. She earned degrees from the University of Maryland and Florida State University.
Dr. Hartley received numerous honors and awards for being an outstanding nurse, nurse educator, as well as for her work in nursing administration. She was active in the community, volunteering at Community Health Incorporated of South Florida in the Human Resources Department and Family Medicine, and at her church in the nursery, the Health Committee, greeting on Sunday morning and preparing folders for service. She served on a number of nursing and health care committees for the State of Florida and for Dade County Public Schools.
Dr. Hartley was married for 55 years to Col. Brodes H. Hartley, who she met during Freshman Orientation week at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. They had two adult offspring, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Our hearts go out to her family and friends.
