University Credit Union (UCU) opened a new branch office in Palmetto Bay on Tuesday, Nov. 30, with bank executives, village officials and others in attendance.

Located at 17770 S. Dixie Hwy. in what is becoming the village’s new “downtown” area, it is the bank’s eighth and newest branch. The University Credit Union Board of Directors and management team joined the guests to celebrate the opening.

“With the focus on personal attention and service, your hometown credit union is now in your hometown, Palmetto Bay,” said Sally Sims, vice president of Marketing and Business Development of UCU.

Palmetto Bay Mayor Shelley Stanczyk, Vice Mayor Brian Pariser and the other village council members — Patrick Fiore, Joan Lindsay and Howard Tendrich — participated, as did former village Mayor Eugene Flinn. Chris Himmel represented Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez’s office and Paul Neidhart, executive director of the Economic Development Council of South Dade, also attended.

Michael J. Welch Sr., UCU president and CEO, UCU Board vice chair Robert Burns, UCU Board chair Dr. Scott Ingold, vice president for IT Eric Hoskins and executive vice president and COO Barbara Thomas represented University Credit Union.

UCU was chartered in 1947 to provide savings and loan services to the faculty and staff of the University of Miami, starting in a small office in the School of Nursing on Red Road. Expanding over the years, the credit union opened a branch on Red Road in UM Whitten Center and at the Medical School. Another small office was opened in 1982 to serve Florida International University, followed by oncampus branches at both Modesto Maidique Campus and Biscayne Bay Campus serving the students, faculty and staff of both universities. It merged in 2005 with the former Lawyers Credit Union and in 2006 opened the West Kendall Center and Branch, and is now able to serve anyone living or working in Miami Dade County.

Lobby Hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon. For more information, call 786- 425-5120.
