A street sign honoring the late George F. Johnson, a longtime resident of Palmetto Bay, was unveiled in an official ceremony on Friday, Apr. 18. A section of SW 144th Terrace between 68th Court and 68th Avenue was named “George Johnson Way.”
Johnson was 65 when he passed away on May 17, 2013. He had served in the United States Coast Guard for 20 years and rose to the position of Deputy Commander, Coast Guard Group Miami. He also worked as an executive with two airlines in Miami, was treasurer of the International Air Cargo Association, served as the church administrator at Old Cutler Presbyterian Church and later as the chief financial officer at Westminster Christian School.
The street naming had been requested by many of Johnson’s neighbors and brought to Councilmember Patrick Fiore by resident Don Noe before the Dec. 9 meeting. The final resolution was approved at the Jan. 6 meeting.
Attending the ceremony were Johnson’s wife, Caroline, and son, Paul, as well as other relatives, neighbors and members of the village council.
