The Village of Palmetto Bay will host, for the second year, an extravagant Independence Day celebration with food, fun and fireworks. The location is Palmetto Bay Municipal Center at 9705 E. Hibiscus St. and the event begins at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 4.
There will be a free fun zone for the kids, a patriotic costume contest, a hula hoop contest, Zumba demonstration, face painters, stilt walkers, jugglers, a prize awarded for the “Most Patriotic Golf Cart,” sack races and of course the fireworks display at 9 p.m.
The event is free, but food vendors will offer a variety of foods from hot dogs and hamburgers, pizza, ribs, ice cream and even old fashioned lemonade for sale. There also will be a beer garden (bring your ID). There will be prize raffles for Palmetto Bay residents only, so proof of residency ID, such as a driver’s license is required.
Saylin Paez, the village’s special events coordinator, said she is excited about this year’s celebration.
“At 9 p.m. the explosive 20-minute fireworks show, shot out of Palmetto Bay Park, will take place,” Paez said. “This year we’ve enhanced the show by adding some colorful, close proximity fireworks near the stage during the anthem and grand finale of the fireworks show. Palmetto Bay residents, friends and neighbors will come together to celebrate America’s 239th birthday on a grand scale, here in the future site of Downtown Palmetto Bay.”
Live music will be part of the event. Nashville recording artist Jade Sanders, a 16-year-old singer/songwriter from Homestead, will be performing, as will the Colbert Band, which is mostly rock and roll.
Emceeing the event will be Michael Baiamonte, “The Voice” of the Miami Heat, along with his sidekick “Burnie,” getting the crowd hyped up. Residents and visitors are asked to bring their lawn chairs and blankets.
There will be various satellite parking areas including: Palmetto Bay Park, St. Richard’s Holy Rosary Church, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Palmetto Bay Outpatient Center and Total Bank. Saylin Paez recommends checking the village website at www.palmettobay-fl.gov for all parking and event details as well as road closures.
