County Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava hosted the District 8 Nonprofit Academy Funders Forum on February 28 to help create a synergy between local nonprofits and Miami-Dade’s top funding organizations and help the groups raise funds.
The Funders Forum, held at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, was the capstone to five months of intense training and development for 19 local nonprofit leaders who graduated from the Nonprofit Academy. The evening event provided a long-awaited opportunity for these nonprofits to participate in “speed-dating” style networking with potential funders, including Allegany Franciscan Ministries, Health Foundation of South Florida, Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Peacock Foundation, The Children’s Trust, and The Miami Foundation.
“Nonprofits are the lifeblood of Miami-Dade County and when they are strong, we all thrive,” said Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava. “They understand the needs of our communities and provide invaluable services to our families. This is why I am deeply committed to investing in our local nonprofits, created the District 8 Nonprofit Academy and host the Funders’ Forum event.”
The Academy features interactive workshops that are facilitated by leading experts to give select nonprofits the tools they need to increase organizational capacity, meet performance standards, and build resilience during uncertain times. In the past three years a total of 54 nonprofits have graduated from the Academy. JPMorgan Chase & Co. was the sole sponsor of the 2017-18 Academy.
Highlighting the Funders Forum was a video of testimonials about how the nonprofits are applying their lessons learned in the Academy. “Our nonprofits are building better boards, writing successful grants, improving their finances, refining and enhancing their performance measurements, and becoming even better community partners,” said Commissioner Levine Cava. “I am proud to say that our Academy is helping our nonprofits serve the community better.”
