When the Village of Palmetto Bay celebrated the anniversary of its incorporation during the annual picnic on Saturday, Mar. 5, at Coral Reef Park, it was also the occasion to announce the male and female winners of the seven-week “Get Fit” Mayor’s Fitness Challenge that began Jan. 10.

The top female overall was Jacqueline Leon and the top male was Ahmad Tavakoly. The two winners lost more than 25 pounds combined in just seven weeks.

Tavakoly was appreciative of the opportunity.

“We would like to thank Mayor Eugene Flinn for not only working tirelessly to make Palmetto Bay the best village in Miami, but also for caring for the wellbeing of its citizens,” Tavakoly said.

“What makes our city such a wonderful place to live is — above anything else — the people. The initiative to get our community moving and active is as admirable as it is important: a community cannot be healthy and content if the individuals are not.”

Tavakoly said that his wife and he joined the “Get Fit” Mayor’s Fitness Challenge to stay true to their health goals for the new year and to make lifestyle changes that would keep them active and healthy.

“We hope the ‘Get Fit’ movement keeps growing with every new great activity planned throughout the year. We are grateful to live in a community where there is always something new and exciting happening,” he added. “We are very appreciative of honorable Mayor Flinn’s leadership and encouragement to live a healthier lifestyle.”

Mayor Flinn continues to challenge everyone to use village programs and park amenities as well as sponsor/partner resources to lose weight and reach their individual health goals.

“I was very pleased with the ‘Get Fit’ program,” Mayor Flinn said. “Once again I am impressed with the spirit of community. I was stopped at places as diverse as the South Dade Y, our parks and even at the local grocery store by people who mentioned they were participating.

More events are coming about as a result of this initiative including a Run Club. So stay tuned.”
