Village of Palmetto Bay Councilmember Karyn Cunningham announced today that she will challenge Village Mayor, Eugene Flinn, in the Village’s municipal elections in November.

“Mayor Flinn’s 2016 decision to vote in favor of building 485 homes along Old Cutler Road, knowing full-well of the detrimental effects it will have on our community’s roads, is a testament of his disregard for our community’s quality of life. His continued insistence in developing this land next to an already traffic-congested road is irresponsible and it will not go unanswered. We need elected officials who are committed to protecting Palmetto Bay. I am eager to begin a conversation about our Village’s future.”, declared Councilmember Cunningham.

“Palmetto Bay has always prided itself as a welcoming, small-town, where residents are able to escape the stresses of everyday life and enjoy their families along with the beautiful parks and recreational opportunities our community has to offer. We must get back to the basics of managing and maintaining our village. I pledge to continue to be a champion for Palmetto Bay families through a people-driven campaign for Mayor; and I am grateful for the outpouring of support for my candidacy.”, added Councilmember Cunningham.

Among her many projects and initiatives, Councilmember Karyn Cunningham is leading the way in creating a first-ever, resident-driven Strategic Plan; she is working diligently with residents and village officials to initiate the first “Park & Ride” pilot program to alleviate traffic congestion, as well as advance her proposal that increases our Village’s parks and green spaces. Karyn is also working to initiate a Safer School Zones program by increasing police presence at our public and private schools.

Karyn Cunningham was elected to Council Seat 1 on Nov. 4, 2014. A native of Miami-Dade County and a graduate of Miami Palmetto Senior High, Councilmember Cunningham graduated Cum Laude from the University of South Florida in 1985 and holds certification in Elementary Education and Psychology. She received her Urban Education Certification from Florida International University in 1987. Karyn and her family have lived in the Village of Palmetto Bay since 1995. She has one daughter, Megan. Karyn also serves on several local boards, including Chamber South, The Melissa Institute for Violence Prevention and Treatment, Common Threads and The Salvation Army.

  1. Eugene Flinn has worked the hardest of anyone on the village council to reduce density and has worked tirelessly to preserve green space, pine rocklands and the coastal land. Voters need to review the actual votes, and follow the money, not the campaign fiction.

  2. Karen Cunningham has a undesirable love for this community. She is a resilient leader of the Village of Palmetto Bay, and has a passion to ensure our neighborhoods remain safe and not overdeveloped.

  3. Not factual. The owner already had 400. The 85 was actually reduced density from possibly 225 extra units the owner could have put on his additional 22 acres of natural lands along Old Cutler. Cunningham/Dubois votes in relation to this property could have/can expose the Village to potentially 600+ units on the site, lawsuits and loss of 22 acres of pine rockland and rockland hammock. Don’t be duped by “the 485” election fodder.

  4. Much good luck with your upcoming endeavors. Having known you for a few years, I had no idea of your very fine educational background, especially, as a cum laude graduate of USF…..congratulations!
