Keyana Cliett started the Miami Job Corps program in February 2022. “I am so impressed with this young lady who didn’t let anything get in her way of completing her high school diploma and Painter Pre-Apprenticeship program, obtaining her driver’s license and starting her career in the Painting field. I asked Keyana why she chose the paint trade? She told me she loved working with colors and that her hobby is art. One day she hopes to go to Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota and study Fine Arts. I know she’ll be successful in everything she does” stated Charles Garcia, Keyana’s IUPAT Paint trade instructor at Miami Job Corps.
Garcia provided Keyana with plenty of hands-on painting projects outside the classroom to help perfect her skills. Keyana worked with other trainees painting the campus’s dining hall, dorms and offices. Keyana also participated in Work Based Learning, a Job Corps painting internship at Historic Virginia Key Beach.
When it came time to completing the Job Corps program and starting her career, Keyana worked closely with her Career Transition Readiness instructor Ms. Linda Boubert on job searching, job applications and interviewing techniques. Ms. Lesly Diaz, Career Transition Specialist, assisted her with researching companies, tracking the progress of her job applications, arranging interviews and transitioning her out of Job Corps successfully.
Keyana impressed all who interviewed her. After just one interview, she was hired on-the-spot as a full-time Painter with Amentum, an international company with more than 36,000 employees in 72 countries in all seven continents. Keyana feels honored to be joining their company at the CAT Miami Distribution Plant in Miami Lakes. Her starting salary is $19/hour plus benefits.
“Keyana came to Miami Job Corps Center and succeeded in everything she did. Keyana has proven to this younger generation that you can be successful, regardless of any barriers, if you put your mind and your heart into it. Keyana’s small frame didn’t stop her. Regardless of her height and weight, this young lady kept up with the other trainees and became one of my best students in my 9-year teaching career as Miami Job Corps’ IUPAT Paint Instructor. I am so proud of her work. I wish her continued success” stated Instructor Garcia.
